My Story

Hi everyone! I just wanted to share my story, for those of you who are new to this "lump in mouth" thing :)\r
In late August of 2005 I noticed a "Canker sore" on the inside of my bottom lip. Two weeks later when it was still there I was a little worried. After trying EVERYTHING I could possibly try to get rid of a canker sore, only making it worse, sometimes even stabbing it to death with a sterilized pin, I thought for sure I was going to die. But I was unable to go to a Dr. at that time because I was living in Virginia, had no car, the people I were living with were unsympathetic so i waited until I got home (Maine) and told my dentist. He took one look and said, "That's a papilloma!" Which is a puss filled thingy - he said they go away on their own but since mine had been there for 4 months at that point, he removed it, had it biopsied (Everything was fine) and it grew back almost immediately (He didn't cut very deep, didn't even have to put stitches in) I then went to a new job in NY, and the thing got bigger and bigger. My dentist said he would remove it again when I came home in April, but this was the end of January and I was in a lot of pain and frustration! One night it hurt so much I had to sleep with my head propped up on pillows to keep the blood from rushing to it. So I called an oral surgeon the next day and said I had a papilloma that needed to be removed. He removed it and a week later when I came back in for a check up, a small lump was forming underneath the original one, and it was getting infected - he then said I had the wrong diagnosis - I actually had a mucocele! Which is a blocked salivary gland. And these things don't typically go away on their own, and the only way to cure the problem is to remove the salivary gland! So he cut in nice and deep, removed it (showed it to me even!) and stitched me up. I was swollen for a while and had a very hard time when it came to smiling, but I lived to tell about it! I went back for three additional check ups and two days ago he declared me officially cured!!! \r

One of the symptoms that made it clear to him that this was a mucocele was when I told him that when I fist got it, it would get really big, then small, big, small, big small. He said that's for sure a mucocele!\r
\r
I hope my story helps soemone with a mucocele to stop freaking out!!!!!! If you can't offord a bunch of different dr. appointments, then I'd reccomend calling an oral surgeon and telling him what you have and seeing if you can come in for an appointment and have it wacked off.

Great story!\r

I can attest to them getting big, then small, then big, then small. It was really freaking me out. It would be stewing – with blood visible under the surface – one minute, and the next minute I would be convinced (probably through wishful thinking) that it was completely gone.\r

Sounds like you (and other people whose stories I have heard) had more than one check-up after your removal. Personally, I didn't see a doctor at all after my surgery. They acted like it wasn't a big deal at all (not that it is a BIG deal). They told me I could just go straight to work after the surgery (nuh uh...had to lay on the couch for the rest of the day), and didn't even mention what to do for pain relief (I just ended up taking a bunch of ibuprofen).

My story began when I bit my lip extra hard during dinner. A while later (I can't remember how soon after, but I'd guess a few weeks) I had this hard bubble on the inside of my lip. I figured it would go away and actually had it for 3-4 months before I figured out what it was and went to a doctor. Luckily, I found out what it was online before my appointment so I no longer worried that it was cancer! I went to a doctor on my campus, then had to go to my family doctor and have him also tell me it was a mucocele, just so he could refer me to my oral surgeon. Then I also had to go to him to have him tell me what it was (AGAIN!) and make an app't to have it removed. (that's 4 appointments just to tell me what it was, after I already knew.) So, I was so scared to have it removed after seeing the pictures David Kadavy had linked to, but I reminded my surgeon that I was a wuss and he numbed me up so well I didn't feel a thing. The whole procedure lasted maybe 10-15 minutes and a hard ball was removed from my lip. (I believe it was the largest one he's ever removed.) I was a little scared during the healing process... the stitches fell out rather quickly instead of disolving like I had expected, but everything healed just fine. I did have a check-up appointment where they told me they could pull them out for me, but I opted to wait for them to fall out on their own. (less pain that way!) Unfortunately for my lip, I have permanently lost sensation in that small section of my lip. It's nothing terrible, just a little annoying sometimes, and feels a little tingly to the touch.

Hello. Mine was quite small, until I was lying in bed one night and I decided to try and pop it with my teeth. That was a bad idea, because now it is more solid, about twice as large and really sensitive to hot food. Mine is on the upper left part on my lower lip.

Ouch, that sounds terrible. I must admit I tried to bite mine too, but not hard enough to make it hurt. (again, I'm a wuss) Have you gone to a doctor yet to have them check on it? \r
Mine was never sensitive to any types of food and it never hurt, so you may want to make an appointment ASAP if you haven't already.

Mine was sensitive to ertain foods, which is why I thought it was a canker sore - it flaired up, at first, when I drank OJ or anything really salty or acidic. But then after a few months it was no respecter of foods! It flaired whenever it felt like it so I ate freely!

I tried popping mine too, but it just wouldn't work. I would manage to rupture the membrane around the mucocele, but the mucocele itself was solid. I don't think mine was sensitive to certain foods, but the area around the mucocele hurt after I popped it. The mucocele itself had no feeling though.

Until I saw this site I have to admit I was freaking out, I am in my 30's and NEVER had anything like this before. I waited about 3 months and actually drained it 4 times, which I dont recomend, before I saw my doctor. Of course I printed out the information to show her and she refered me right to my oral surgeon.
Yesterday I had it removed...well not just it...I had 6 of them all in one lump, yes I actually saw them. He sent them off to the lab just to be sure that all was ok and I have to go back there next week to get the results.
Today my lip is very swollen but it isnt sore at all. Its a little numb, like some nerves were severed but I am so happy they are out of there I dont even care. I have 3 stitches in there that will dissolve on their own. Actually the worst part was getting the shot to numb up my lip, I hate needles!!!!
Thank you so much for this site. I dont know how long it would have taken me to find out what it was. My doctor didnt even know till I showed her the information I got from this site. Its hard enough to get time off from work for one or two drs appts but to be passed around from dr to dr is a waste of time. However my oral surgeon knew exactly what it was...I was impressed.

Wow, am I ever greatful for this site!! I have had a mucocele for as long as I can remember (I'm 51!!) on the right side of my inner lower lip. I thought it was just something weird about me--I've never known anyone else who had this. Mine was never bothersome to me unless I was unfortunate enough to bite it while eating. Boy did it ever hurt then. Just this past weekend I bit it really hard while eating and then because it started swelling, I bit it 2 or 3 more times the same night!! (What can I say, I was eating pizza, my favorite!!) Anyway, it swelled so bad that my whole bottom lip hurt and I was taking Ibuprofen for the swelling. So tonight, I was just sitting at the computer with nothing to do so I decided to type in "lump on lower lip" in my browser bar and lo and behold, I came upon this site! Thank you so much!!! I don't have health insurance, so I won't be going to the doctor for it. I will just live with it for the rest of my life. I am thankful to find out that it actually has a name and isn't just some weird thing about me.
