I had the lump in my mouth for over 2 months, finally went to the dr. and she said right away it was a mucocele and scheduled me to have it removed saying it would not go away by itself, unfortunately, the earliest date to have it removed was over 3 weeks away, now- about 2 weeks ago i was eating some reaLly salty french fries and it made it feel wierd and now it is almost completely gone, I still have another week before I am supposed to have it removed but there is nothing there now but a very small white dot,- do they go dormant? is it still there? is it going to come back? do I cancel the removal?\r

I know there were some times when I thought my mucocele had gone away, but then it came back (probably just wishful thinking). If you really think it's gone, you should call your doctor. You may decide that if it isn't bothering you, there's no need to have surgery. I guess if it came back, you could always get it removed then!
I've got one in my mouth right now. Good thing for Google - WebMD doesn't even cover this topic.
Mine always occurs when I accidentally bite my lip (I have a cross-bite), stays for a day or two, and then goes away. Except, this time around.
Today, I had no trauma, and it came out of nowhere. It got to the size of half a cm in a matter of hours. It's the third time it's come up in three weeks. When it first came at the beginning of the month, I poked it. It deflated a little, but came back up. Then, I just bit it. It went away in a day, but I had a bit of scar tissue left over. Then, it just came back a week later, and ballooned from nothing into half a cm. I did the same thing to it again, and it went away. Today it just came out of nowhere (the other times were because I accidentally bit my lip), but I think I might have triggered it by sucking on my lip slightly while feeling the scar tissue.
This time around, I'm just going to leave it alone and see if it goes away on its own. It always had before, since I was child. The only reason why I've played with it these last few times is because it's double the size I've experienced all my life. Then again, I've never bit my lip so hard before as to draw blood as I did at the beginning of the month.

First, hurrah for this site, saved me a lot of stress! Thanks kadavy.
Mine, i'm fairly sure, turned up over night a couple of months ago, fitted all the descriptions on these pages, and was diagnosed a few weeks later by my GP as being a harmless 'mucoid cyst' (I live in the UK, and the GP didn't use the term mucocele). He was fairly sure it would eventually just go away on its own, and 6 weeks later, it does indeed appear to have completely vanished. It had deflated a few times and then returned, but now there's no evidence of it at all. So i reckon that after having it checked out by someone who knows what they are doing, maybe worth waiting a bit before any surgery just in case it vanishes.
Just a coincidence I suspect, but the point where i noticed mine was completely flat was also just after eating a bag of very salty crisps (potato chips). Anyway, i'm not speculating any more on the magic healing powers of sodium chloride covered potatoes.

I've had mine for six weeks, and several times it has been down to a small white dot, but so far it always comes back. Mine seems to go in a 3-4 day cycle. So I wouldn't cancel a removal date just because it seems better for a few days. I'd want it to be gone for a good 3-4 weeks before I really heave a sigh of relief.
I'm a counter-example to the magic potato chip/crisp hypothesis. I ate some salty chips and they caused it to swell back up! Sometimes even the action of a spoon against my lip seems to trigger it.

OK, I'm kind of afraid of jinxing it, but mine has been dormant for a week now, and even the white dot has disappeared. I can't see or feel anything unusual left on my lip, and it hasn't bothered me at all. For the last 6 weeks, it was never dormant for more than a couple of days before it swelled back up again. So I'm starting to have some hope it may have spontaneously healed. I think I saw a few references on the web that said that IS possible. *fingers crossed* But if it comes back after this, I'll schedule the surgery and I won't cancel it just because it goes down for a while. Take that, mucocele!
What's the longest anyone here has had one remain dormant between flare-ups?

Mine still seems to be in the process of gradually going away. The period between flare-ups keeps getting longer, and the flare-ups are shorter and less severe. So take heart; I think it is possible for them to heal without surgery!
i too want to thank kadavy for starting this forum... the power of the internet to cover just about every
subject is really cool... i see it growing in this direction. If one just googles, "lump in mouth" , one
gets only that it may be cancer.... they seem to LIKE to scare people?? anyway, i have a mucocele
(i hope so)... it is in area on lower left lip... been there about 3 weeks, seems to be a nodule like
thing that when i "play" with it using me tongue, it shifts around. no pain... i hope to wait it out
and let it go away on its own. it is about the size of a half a pencil eraser now after over 3 weeks
the best to everyone =D

Yep, it has now been several months since my last visit, and I'm happy to report that my mucocele is no longer a significant problem. It goes 3-4 weeks (and I think it has gone as long as 6 weeks) between flare-ups, and when it does flare up, it's not that big, and it swells up, then deflates and goes away all within a day to a day-and-a-half. So it's really no more than a minor annoyance. I'm glad I didn't rush out and have surgery on it, because it's no big deal now. I would recommend being patient if you can tolerate it to see what it will do, before you run out and get cut on.
Good luck, y'all! :)
