So,, like you all I have this bump thingy on my lip that got bigger, then smaller and bigger. I have had it now for over a month and i have become progressively worried about it. About a week ago I googled bump in lip and staring me in the face was ORAL CANCER. I went through the obligatory "my life is over i have oral cancer bit" and after that was over i did the right thing and made an appointment with my dentist. After my dentist told me to come in the next day it only brought back the feelings of despair. I thought if it wasn't something major he would have not told me to come in so soon, so it must be oral cancer,,, yada yada yada,,, im too young to die. The next day at work I was worried and i couldn't concentrate on anything except this damn bump and how it might be cancer. Also, i forgot to mention my grandfather died of cancer, my mother has had cancer and i just quit using chewing tobacco, these facts combined together put the fear of god in me.

So I get to the dentist and what do you know he tells me its a ****mucocele****. Mine was not quite as pronounced or large as others on this site, so as recomended i am going to wait and see if it goes away on its own. This whole experience has certainly given me more motivation to continue abstaining from snuff or any other type of tobacco. I am not a religious person, but when people talk about signs from a higher being this might be what they are talking about. Without this Mucocele I might of continued using tobacco for a long time. I'm only 27 years old and I would like to live a long life and this mucous cyst has (not to sound corny) really changed my life.

My advice to anyone is if you think you have any type of lump bump or whatever on your lip or anywhere else don't speculate, go have it checked out. You are better off emotionally and physically if you face your health concerns by having a doctor examine what is ailing you.

Kadavy,, thank you for this site!!! My worst fears did not come true and I went into my dentist's office armed with knowledge of what the bump might possibly be. Your information enabled me to keep my sanity while waiting for my doc appointment and kept my hope alive. Thank you kindly.

Oh one last bit: I was told that its better to leave the mucocele alone instead of poking and prodding it.

Hey Reggie -

How long were dipping before you quit?

hey nb,,

I dipped for about 5 years. By the by my mucocele is more or less gone now so surgery is not required. And I have not had a dip in two months. Throughout those years I would average about a can a week. At one point I got up to a can a day for about a month, and backed that down to one can a week. It is not that much and not that long, but my family has a history of cancer which was my main concern....
