Don't Get Mucocele Surgery On Tongue!

I just had a mucocele removed today on the underside of my tongue. I am in the US military and a military doctor did the procedure. He didn't inform me that he was going to make a 1 inch incision on the bottom of my tongue; I guess I thought he was just going to cut off the mucocele like you cut the stem off the top of a tomato. Had an IV and anesthesia, and got the site cauterized and stitched with 4 dissolveable stitches. It's been over 15 hours since the surgery and MY TONGUE IS STILL NUMB. I am beginning to think they severed a nerve. My tongue does not look normal either, it looks like they pulled one side of my tongue over in order to stitch it back together. I am very scared and am going to call the dr. tomorrow if the numbness persists. Also, when they stitched me up, they cut the ends of the stitches really long so now they are scraping the bottom of my mouth under my tongue. If I could go back in time, knowing how the surgery would turn out, I would probably keep popping the mucocele and skip the surgery. I also read that doctors can do a procedure now where they freeze them off or just put one stitch around it and it falls off, instead of hacking up my tongue like what happened today. I've never heard of them taking out the whole saliva gland, which is what I think the military doctor did to me. I have never had a good military doctor. I feel like they think they can perform any procedure and not suffer the consequences if they mess up, because you can't sue Uncle Sugar if you work for him! Any suggestions or advice on how I can get feeling back in my tongue. HELP!!!!!! :o

Sorry to hear you're having such a bad experience. Please keep us updated.

Your doctor probably did take out the entire salivary gland, as that is essentially what a mucocele is: just a clogged salivary gland that must be removed.
