Thankfully, this seems to be a pretty common problem. I just noticed I had a little hard ball under my tongue yesterday (very small, maybe 2mm in diameter) and hypochondriac like I am, I googled and found this site. I salt-gargled and I hope it just goes away on its own, because my college health insurance doesn't cover anything in the mouth, and I don't have insurance at home. If it gets bigger, I might have to, though. This is really just a rant on how bad health insurance is in the U.S. I have to suffer with this stupid little thing because I can't afford to get it removed!
Also, it appeared out of the blue, without any mouth trauma (I didn't even bite anything like a lot of the stories here). It's underneath my tongue, so I don't know how I could have ruptured anything under there except in my sleep. That just doesn't seem fair.

mine was in the same spot, and i was in the same situation financially...
it's usually $50-$100 to get it checked out, and around $1000 to get it removed. i went to three different oral surgeons, and i recommend shopping around. the surgeon that removed mine let me pay in installments.
i wasn't sure if i had bit my tongue either... i think these things just show up sometimes.
but at least get it checked out asap.
