My mucocele removal

Hello everyone, I just wanted to post my experience. I know what its like to have it and it SUCKS. Mine was on the inside of my lower lip and extended outside of my lip too. I went to my dr and he said it was a cold sore and if there isn't any pain I shouldn't worry about it and let it be (yea right). I went to another dr and he told me it was a mucocele and I needed surgery to get it removed. He said he would've done mine in his office if it wasn't so huge, it was like a mini-me.

Long story short, I had my surgery on Friday. They put me under general anesthesia and when I woke up it was GONE! My lip didn't hurt so much when I came home, and my ENT (who was also my surgeon) prescribed me tylenol 3 along with amoxocillin to prevent infection. The pain was never that bad, But the day after surgery my lip was HUGE. Now (monday) the swelling has went down a considerable amount and there is little pain if any. Im just so glad its gone and I don't have to be embarrassed about going out in public.

My advice to anyone who has or thinks they have a mucocele is to get it checked out asap, especially if its on your lip or its very noticeable. I say this because from my experience with this whole ordeal is, it takes forever just to get your actual surgery. I went from 1 dr to the next dr just to tell me it was a mucocele (2wks). Then I had to wait to be seen by an ENT (2 wks, only cuz I harassed my dr). Then the ENT scheduled me for surgery ( a whole 3 1/2 wk process). All the while I had to try to hide my "twin" while I would talk to people or go out. But its worth it in the end to have that little sh*t removed. Good luck everyone

I'm glad everything went well for you. I am surprised though that they used general anesthesia. Did your doctor tell you why he did that instead of local?

Hi Josh,

I am glad your surgery went well, I also had them knock me out for mine. I had the option of that or locals, and I can't stand needles, I paid more for them to knock me out.

What they used to knock me out was called "conscious sedation", it is similar to the anesthesia used if you have a colonoscopy. You fall asleep and you do not remember anything. They use conscious sedation for more minor procedures (mucocele removal, pulling a tooth, colonoscopy, endoscopy) because it does not depress your core body functions (respiratory and heart) as much as general anesthesia does. But you still go to sleep and don't remember anything, and don't have to have all those shots, that is the good part.
