This is a great site with more info about mucocele than any other I found on the net. My 10 y/o daughter ended up with one in her mouth in August. We too thought it was a canker sore & tried somehome remedies for the first few days. But it didn't go away. So I took her to the pediatrician & he said it was a ranula. So home I went back to the internet to search ranula. Mucocele. I came across this site & was amazed to see all the gross pics of them but I knew what my daughter had. She thinks she bit her lip at some point too. We have talked about surgery but since it really does not bother her that much (other than not being able to play the clarinet), we are letting it be for the time being. She does not want to have any surgery. We also found an alternative treatment where they pierce it with one stich, leave it overnight & take it out the next morning. Still, she is only 10...
I am grateful for this site. I read all the discussions & feel much better knowing there are others out there in the same boat.
Thanks again & I'll touch base again soon if anything happens-I think she will LOVE the salty chip idea-maybe we'll try it.....lol

I was scared enoug at 19 to have the surger done; I can't imagine having it done at 10! If your daughter does decide that she might be able to handle the surgery though, you should know that it is completely painless. I kept my eyes closed the entire time and had no idea what was happening. I still imagine this would be scary for her, but I'm sure if she wanted it to go away, she could do it.

Keep us updated on what you and your daughter decide on, and good luck.

I had mine done under "conscious sedation" anesthesia. If I was conscious, though, I do not remember it. They can give you sedation in your iv to where you fall asleep and do not remember a thing. I do not like pain and I do not like shots so that was the only way to go for me. I did wake up in pain, however, and they gave me pain meds for that.

Just wanted you to know so you could check into that option for your daughter if you thought it would be right for her.

Thanks for your input! It seems to go up & down with the things she eats & we are just gonna "stick it out" for right now. Will let you know if anything happens! By the way, have a safe holiday season!

Wow, it has been a year & a half since I last posted & time sure flies. I am thrilled to say that my daughter no longer has her lump!! When the school year ended, she decided she no longer wanted to play the clarinet (because of the darn lump in her mouth). So, not wanting to pressure her to do something she no longer wanted to do, I let her give it up. By the end of summer, it was gone. Totally gone. We had forgotten all about it since she was not playing the clarinet anymore & it was a busy summer but when school started again in the fall, we realized it was gone. I am glad we decided to wait & it finally went away. NOW, she thinks she wants to play the oboe. What can ya do????? lol
I am really fortunate to have come across this website when I needed it. :)
