My daughter who is almost a yr. old sleeps in the bed with me. Sometime in January, she bumped my lip with her head in the middle of the night. At 1st it was just a bump that went away but after a week or so it re-appeared! It looked like a canker sore but then the skin healed and left this bump almost in the center of my bottom lip! I am so self concious when I talk to people, I wonder if they are staring at it! The Dr. I saw had no idea what it was and said it looked like a bruise and it would probably go away! I came back cause it was getting bigger and she gave me a herpes test! What an idiot!!!! I saw a different Dr. a few weeks later and she referred me to a dermatologist who said it was a mucocele and he'd remove it! (I'm still waiting for a follow up appt. to get it removed.) Well just 2 nights ago, the baby bumped my lip, again, while sleeping and now I have what looks like a canker sore on my upper lip in the exact spot where she broke my lip! Hopefully I won't get two mucocele's!

So how did you get yours?

PS Thanks to the person that came up with this site, it rocks!

Hey pinky, I'm glad you like the site. I have no idea how I got my mucocele, as far as I know, it just showed up one day!

Pinky, I got my mucocele from biting my lip. I manage to bite my lip fairly often while I'm eating and not so gently either.

Pinky, I woke up one day with what I thought was another mouth ulcer brought on by stress as there had not been trauma to my mouth that I was aware of. Soon the thing was OUT OF CONTROL. Fortunately this site calmed my fears that it was a mouth cancer. The MC got really big, and I finally went to a Dr who referred to an ENT. The ENT drained it and said that either, it could go away or I would need follow-up surgery. Apparently the draining just made it really angry bc it came back in 2 days time and was bigger than ever! I scheduled surgery for the next week, but lo and behold it was gone in a few days. The ENT really wanted to operate, and said it would be general anesthesia instead of local that I read about on here. This really bothered me. Since cancelling, I have kept an informal diary, every couple of days noting what state it is in. For the last week or two it has been gone. From reading other posts I understand this to be a common trend, but I really hope that it is gone!

I hope your second hit doesn't turn in to one, my dog the other day hit and busted my lip with his head and I was worried for a couple of days that it was going to turn into another one... so far the coast is clear!

Thanks to the creator of this site- You and the posters armed with knowledge of what to ask, what to expect and what treatment from the doc to not put up with.

Thanks so much.

I got my first "bump" two weeks ago (it just showed up) and freaked out until I found this awesome site. I drained my own mucocele, but it is definately not for the faint hearted. I sterilized a good sized safety pin, sat in my bathroom sink closely in front of the mirror (with good lighting), pinned the mucocele between my thumb and finger of my left hand, and slowly pushed the pin in with my right. Surprisingly, if you find the salivary duct, it did not hurt, and the pin goes in a lot further than expected !! I withdrew the pin, squeezed the heck out of the mucocele, and quite a lot of clear saliva came out. When there was no more clear stuff coming out I stopped squeezing, gave my lip a good salt water wash, and voila!, it was done. There was a small lump left after the draining, but over the next three days it slowly got smaller until it was gone. I believe I got my mucocele one of two ways: Either a smash in the face from my energetic 3 year old son, during the night, or from biting the inside of my mouth. Anyone who is a mouth biter should wear a mouth guard at night. I am trying one now as I don't care to get another one of these awful things !!!

Ok so the day after tomorrow I'm getting this ugly lump removed!!! Thank God! I did try squeezing it in the begining and some clear fluid did come out but it was only temporary, at least for me! I'd do it at night right before bed and by morning it would be full again! So I just decided to let a doc look at it and hopefully remove it! I am 99% positive that it will be local anethesia. I too would be weary if someone wanted to knock me out for a little bump on my lip, then again I'm afraid I may never wake up from the general anesthesia. When I got my wisdom teeth pulled out, I told them just to give me local, I'd rather know what's going on then to wake up to some horror story! I'll keep you posted on my "surgery" and I'll try to get some pix...wish me well! :D

Best of luck to you, Pinky. Let us all know how how you made out (from what I've heard it should only take a few minutes, thankfully).

Hello my Mucocele survivors!
Finding this website has been a breath of fresh air! I have had a Mucocele in my mouth for 2 months now and after seeing my doctor who was clueless of what it was and getting blood tests, i finally find out today from a dermatologist, that its only a mucocele. After 2 months of stessing over what this lump was i finally get closure. I remember burning my lip on some hot soup, sure enough thats all it took for this little guy to take off. Its nice to know i am not the only one who has this. now i just have to wait for the surgery date. I have never had surgery before i am a little bit nervous!!!
how funny is this website, just a bunch of people bonding over Mycocele experiences. I kinda like it. haha

Well I had my mucocele removed yesterday! It was almost painless, the only pain I had was when the doc injected my lip w/novacaine to numb it and that was no big deal. I had mine removed by a dermatologist. He used a punch (its like a tiny circular cookie cutter) to remove it. There was also some snipping here and there since the sack burst, but didn't feel a thing! My 7 y/o son and 1 y/o daughter were in the room when it happened and my son kept telling me all about it, like "there's so much blood" (there really wasn't) and "ewwww, there's ooze coming out" (it was the saliva in the mucocele, it was like slime or stringy gel). Other than my son talking thru out the whole thing (after I repeatedly told him to be quiet) it was fine. The novacaine wore off an hour later and it felt like someone had pinched my lip but then it stopped. I didn't even need tylenol later on. My lip didn't really swell and I even got 2 dissolvable stitches. My only concern is a little piece of skin that looks like it might stick out a teeny bit from the incision. The doc said he could take it off later if it still bothered me. For now I hope that it will go down as it heals! Anything is better that that half inch bump I had on my lip! Yes it was half an inch big! I have pics if anyone wants to see them but I'm not sure how to post them here! Thanks again to Kadavy for this great website!

I happen to bite the same part of my inner, lower lip almost every time I eat. I even broke skin. But I couldnt control it, well I could, I would just eat really slowly and thats just inconvienent. But the broken skin healed and I noticed this odd lump. I went out for a few hours. I came home and noticed it was bigger and now filled with clear stuff. I ate more carefully, but but it twice and it hurt. I assumed from what I read all over the place that it was a very small mucocele (2mm-3mm). But I'm waking up the next morning and the lump appears limper that in was yeasterday and there is redness around it. It also hurts more when my tounge touches it. I am going to assume that I bit it in my sleep and it was enough to break it.

I bit my lip, hard, several times in the course of a month. The first time was when i was eating (and crunching down HARD on carrots). I bruised up so badly you could see blue on the outside of my mouth. The subsequent times were all because the damaged area was in the way. So I kept hitting the same spot. It doesnt help that I have a slight overbite and pinch my lip on occasion.

I thought to myself "well at least my mouth will heal up quickly, it always does". How ironic were those words.

That was last November. Ive delt with this thing since then.

Mine appeared about 2 years ago, and never really got that large, or even that noticeable (I thought). My dentist said it was a mucocele and that I should get it removed. So I of course continued to ignore it. Then one day a few months ago my 3 year old nephew asked me why I had a nipple on my lip. So I realized it was more noticeable than I thought and had it removed two days ago.

Since it was so long ago I can't really remember how it came about, but I am a lip biter so I would assume that it was just that and not any specific trauma.

I know that the cause is supposed to be trauma to a salivary gland, but I am convinced that I somehow got it while impatiently using my teeth (instead of a knife) to peel fresh lychees. I don't know whether the rough skin on the lychee injured me, or whether there was some kind of substance in the lychee skin the caused the salivary gland to plug and rupture (I have no idea if that's even possible), but I don't recall feeling any pain, and I've certainly bitten into harder things that scratched my lips much worse in the past. I guess this is why I keep thinking there was some substance on the exterior or witihn the skin of that bizarro tropical fruit. Lychees are good, though....I still like them. I have forgiven them. ;-) But I will definitely be more careful about peeling them in the future. I had never even heard of a mucocele before this happened. Now that I know it can happen, I'm going to be super careful with my mouth.

I bit the fire out of my lip last year and, within hours, a lump started to appear!

Yep, got mine the usual way - bit on my lower lip while eating. I had done this a few times over the years before this with no problem to speak of. However, the last time i did it, a mucocele was the result. So I had the surgery and it was perfect. I realized that I had gotten a little careless or sloppy with my bite. I have my main bite but when i get careless or in a real hurry there is, well, an alternative hinge in my jaw that permits me to bite a bit differently. And it is that bite that gets me in trouble, ie, makes it much more likely that I will bite my lower lip. So in the immediate aftermath of my mucocele, I consciously got more deliberate and careful for awhile. Gradually, my "good" bite got back to being second nature and so now i do not really think about my bite anymore. The small amount of effort that I needed to make to get rid of the "bad" bite when I am in a hurry was well, well worth it because mucoceles are real buggers to deal with and I do not ever, ever want to get one again.

I hope things turned out well for you. To answer your question, I got my mucocele after biting my bottom lip so hard I thought I was going to cry. My husband and I were out to dinner and I was eating a salad, and while biting down, my teeth slipped off the lettuce and whammy, I bit my bottom lip. I noticed a sore lump the next day and figured it would go away. It did not. I went to my dentist, she said it was a canker sore and it would go away. It did not. I went back to the dentist, she suggested giving it more time. I did, and still it did not go away. The dentist finally refered me to an oral surgeon. He removed it and I am healing. I still have some numbness and slight swelling and I am 10 weeks into it. I am hoping the numb nerves will regenerate and I will once again be able to pronounce the letter F and the number 5.

I got mine after an op where they took tissue from inside my bottom lip to use as a graft elsewhere. It was a far worse op than removing a mucocele and healing took weeks. After a while it was obvious that it wasn't healing nicely and a mucocele was developing. I was told to give it time blah blah and eventually they removed it. Now another has appeared but it's quite small and I have yet to be bothered to get it removed. The inside of my lip is a mess anyway so this doesn't make much difference.

I think i have a mucocele, it used to be this really big bump on the inside of my lower lip but now its a bit smaller. i had it for a while so i dont think its a canker sore, despite what the doctor at my walk in clinic said.
my uncle who is also a doctor said it was herpes simplex and right now im really paranoid:|
the pictures ive seen of mucoceles look exactly like what i have tho
do i get checked with an oral surgeon to make sure? or get my doctor to take tests?
heellp mee :(

There aren't any tests your doctor can do to identify it unless they remove it and send it to the path lab. It just needs someone who knows what they're doing to look at it and say what it is. If it's a mucocele you can then get it removed or leave it alone just as you like.

I have no idea. It's under my tongue (ranula), so there wasn't any trama or anything.

Can stress cause mucoceles?
