wow. first off just want to thank you for this site, this was a godsend. i had no idea what popped up in my mouth about a month ago.
heres my quick story: 1 month ago i went out to dinner with friends. i don't remember biting my mouth hard or anything, but i did have a good amount of sake (japanese restaurant) and its very possible i either bit my lip or burned it. anyways the next day i had this pretty good size lump in my mouth. i figured it was a canker sore so i waited a few days. but wow, it just got bigger. it didnt get better at all. i quickly hit the net and found a blog that referenced this site. came here and looked at the pictures, read the stories, my lump was exactly as described. i decided to wait a few weeks and hope it went away.
well no luck, it never went away. and strangely it never got smaller, it only got slightly larger. i bit it quite often while eating. really the worst part was that it became visible when i talked. i felt so self-concious, like people were staring at it. no one ever said anything about it (even my girlfriend) but who knows. so enough was enough after 3 weeks, i made an appointment with an oral surgeon for a consultation. i went in today for that appt and showed them it and they were like "yup, its a mucocele. and its a pretty good size" the doctor came in and he was surprised by my knowledge on the topic. i think he usually sees people who have no idea what it is. he said one guy actually asked him at the gym about it, and said he's had it for years! anyway i lucked out, he said we can do this now if you just want to use novocaine. after reading the stories here i thought that would be fine. lets do it i said! i was so desperate to get this thing out.
so he puts in the novocaine, and yeah i'd say its slightly more than a pinch of pain. he really stuck the thing in there twice. i've had novocaine before and it seemed like he kinda did it more than usual. my mouth was definitely numb. so he cuts me open and everything. i gotta tell ya guys, it was more than "no big deal." i could feel pretty much all the cutting, i felt all the pulling and everything. this doc didn't talk during it but it did go on for what seemed like forever. it must have been at least 15 to 20 minutes of some mild pain. it definitely wasn't no pain. i actually just thought about sports and stuff to keep my mind off of it. and i'm no wimp, i've had surgery before....i've had wisdom teeth out.....i've had plenty of cavities drilled. this was definitely the most uncomfortable surgery i've had done while awake. i think most of the uncomfort comes from having your bottom lip folded over and held there for like 20 minutes. putting in the stitches didn't hurt much but i did feel. all i could think of was ARE YOU DONE YET!?!?!? GOOD GOD....
so i just wanted to share my story. i am definitely psyched its out, i was in some pain so i took vicodin (which he prescribed) and i'm gonna ice this sucker. i cant imagine eating anything right now. maybe i'll follow up this weekend if people are interested. the surgery wasn't awful but i just wanted to throw it out there that it wasn't a piece of cake. i know that seems to differ from a lot of peoples stories here. but just wanted to share. i really hope to god i never get one of these again. i dont want to go through that ever again. i am going to chew so carefully for about the next 3 years!!

Wow- didn't sound like a pleasant experience, but it also sounded like it was a large one "yup, its a mucocele. and its a pretty good size" . I hope your recovery goes well. This kind of experience makes me more inclined
to get mine removed by laser if I decide to get surgery.

you are right, i think it was larger than normal and maybe thats the reason it was more complicated. the nurse even hinted to the doctor that it was a lot to sit through and i think she was implying i probably should have been under general anaesthesia. anyway i am on day 3 here, the swelling has gone down but the bruising seems to actually be looking worse as time goes on. i believe thats pretty normal. my whole bottom lip is very tender, its been tough to eat anything other than very soft foods. i've been icing it quite a bit although i've found sipping on ice water is just as effective. i am just going to take it easy. its been a very boring weekend but i am now kinda glad i had it done on a friday so i had the weekend to recover. i really dont feel like i can do much of anything.
just one more note, i talked to my father and he said he had the exact same thing a few years ago in the exact same place. i know mucoceles are supposedly caused by mouth trauma, but it does make me wonder whether there is a predisposition for these things? just an interesting note
