Pardo me if someone already discussed this. But I could not find a thread on this.

About a week ago I woke up with this "bump" inside my mouth. I will try to describe the exact location. Keep in mind, I do not know the correct names of the anatomy of the inside of mouths! I did try googling..but no help!

On the inside of lower lip, between the gumline and your lower lip, directly in the center fold. Right below your center bottom front teeth gumline and your lower lip there is this little fold of skin. WHAT IS THAT LITTLEFOLD OF SKIN CALLED???

Anyway, that's where this little bump, blister came up. I waited about 3 days and decided to go to the doctor. His nurse like to diagnose things before the doc gets in the little room. The nurse asked why I was there. I told him that I had 2 bumps (sores) in my mouth. One was on the side of my cheek (which I thought that was from a cheek bite while eating or a canker sore). The other was in that little fold of skin in the lower front of my mouth. That was the one I was concerned about. It looked as though it might be an insect bite because I could see a little hole in the center of it. It was red and on top of that it had a clear blistery appearance. Then there was a small pinhole there. It hurt like a SOB too. The nurse quickly said "Oh that is a fever blister...also called Herpes." I knew he didn't know what he was talking about.

Doctor came into the room and said the one of the inside side of my cheek was a canker sore. But the lower one was a mucocele. He said if this was on the lip part he would just numb me and remove it. But being that this is in this location, he could not do this. Then he said "Just wait and it will eventually go away. Or you could just get something and jab it and drain it and it will have all this clear liquidy stuff come out of it."

Well it's been only 2 days since I saw the doctor and the little pinprick hole has enlarged. So has the bump (mucocle.) It still hurts like hell. And I DO NOT remember ever hitting my mouth or any kind of injury. I do wear an appliance at night on my upper teeth for teeth grinding. And this location of the mucocle is in a place where there is NO WAY you can bite that area.

My question is: Seems like everyone here is saying their mucocle did not really hurt before it was removed. Should I go directly to an Oral Surgeon? And will the Oral Surgeon give me a choice of being knocked out and having this done? And can this be removed in an Oral Surgeons office just like wisdom teeth? (I mean, you know how they knock you out in the Oral Surgeons office to remove wisdom teeth ) Or would I have to go to the hospital for this?

I am so worried. Like I said, this thing really hurts. Please help calm me down. Thanks. - VikingJuice (VJ)

Hey man, chill! True, my Mucocele didn't hurt, so you better get it checked out. I think you can go straight to an Oral Surgeon, but maybe you need a referral? When I had my Mucocele removed, they only used local anesthetic. Let us know how it goes!

I will. I just talked to a friend today who said she had on of these when she was about 7 years old. Her mom took her to the doctor and he said to take her to an Oral Surgeon. Her mom made the appoitment for the next week. But she said she went home and took a pin ( like a safety pin) and stuck it right in the thing and popped it. She said it never came back. Her mom cancelled the appointment. She thinks I am being stupid about all this. But this darn thing hurts like hell. I went out and bought a bunch of Slim Fast drinks. At least I might lose some weight. LOL.

So I take it that all of you who had these mucocels, they didn't hurt when you had them? This is what is concerning me. Mine hurts. Thanks. -VJ

hey dude. i know most people say theirs didn't hurt, but mine did hurt at times. i wouldn't say painful..but sensitive and uncomfortable. but the lip is pretty flexible. maybe the reason yours hurts more is because of the location. i know what area you are talking about and anytime i've hit myself there it seems to be extra sensitive.

i knew i had a mucocele so i went straight to an oral surgeon. i got there and the guy was like ok lets take it out. i didn't need a referral though for my health plan. but even if you do, you can usually do this over the phone. just go see somebody. its not worth stressing over. i did that for a month and it was worse than the actual removal or recovery (which i'm in now).

Thanks Johnny. I wish you a speedy recovery.

Mine feels like I have a blister the size of a marble in that area. I just looked at it and the little clear pinhole that was there has now tripled in size. I am calling an Oral Surgeon today. I'll let you know what happens. thanks alot. ~ VJ

I called the Oral Surgeon the other day. They don't think this is a mucocele because they said those don't hurt when you have them. Oh no! And they cannot get me in until April 17th.

I've read almost every thread on this board searching for some similarity. My bump us about a cm big. started off with just a pinhole in the center. Now that pinhole has gotten wider and it looks like acrater. Nothing comes out it. It's hollow. I have never seen any pus or liquid come out either. And I did try to squeeze it. Hurt like SOB when I did. I even poured a bunch of salt on it. That just made it burn like mad. Tried peroxide rinses too.

If anyone else had something similar, please reply. If not, I'll let you know what happens in 2 weeks. Oh and BTW, I am being knocked out for this procedure. My Primary doctor said that the shot alone would be extremely painful in this area. He said he would get knocked out to do this.! ~ VJ

My little surgery is schedule for this Tuesday. I am scared. I am being knocked out too. The size ogf this thing has grown to about 2x the size when I first had it diagnosed. And it looks real weird. None of the examples I have seen looks like what I got. Hate to be the drama queen here....but I am really scared. And now I noticed that the bottom of the outside of my mouth, like directly on the opposite side of where this bum is, is all swollen. I'll check back in on Wednesdy and let you know

Best of luck to you VJ. I could understand your angst. You say it was diagnosed -what was
their best guess. To me, a non med professional it sounds like it grows too fast to be
a cancer??? Let us know what happens- we'd like to hear.

I went to see the Oral Surgeon today. I was scheduled for a consultation + the removal of this "bump" too. Also I requested General Anesth.

The doctor said this resembled a mucocele but was not. He asked if I had had an injury to the area: NO.
He did an X-ray to make sure this wasn't the start of an abcess which would require a root canal he thought.
X-ray showed no abcess. But a good 25% of my gum in this area was receded. I think he said 25% of my bone there was also gone.

He still questioned if I had an injury to this area. He said it really looked like the type of bump that results from an injury or improper fitting dentures. HE said he never saw anything like this just pop up on it's own. The office also had a Periodontist there. So he asked that doctor to take a look. He said he never saw anything like this either just pop up like this. They talked back and forth about whether or not to just go ahead and remove it and biopsey it. But the problem is this bump is so close to my bottom 3-4 teeth that they are scared of risking losing more bone/gum not to mention losing the teeth.

He gave me a Rx dental rinse to use for the next 10 days. He also said to keep a close eye on it daily to see whether it gets bigger. If it gets any bigger I am to make an appointment and get in immediately and they will remove it. Doc said he is curious as to what this could be and what caused this. The only three things I think may have happened is: 1) I had pizza that weekend with pineapples on it. I usuually put those pizza peppers on too. Maybe one of those got stuck down there and burned my gum. Or I may have had a reaction to the acid in pineapple. OR 2) I may have scratched my mouth in my sleep. I do wear a night guard because I am grinder. or 3) I also have silicone poisoning (yes caused from ruptured silicone implants---I know alot of people consider this controversial..and I did not even mention this to the doctors today because most of them just write us off when we do mention this) but alot of the silicone women complain of unusual mouth ulcers. I use to get little uclers on the back of my tongue...clear in the back section. The dentist told me those were just inflammed salivary glands and jsut rinse with salt water when they happpened. But since I quit smoking, I have not had any of those.

Both the docs agreed that it looked like it was in the healing stage though. Hope they are right.

I'll post again in the next few weeks and update. - VJ
