Here's some new information for anyone who has something on their lip that doesn't fit the normal mucocele profile.
I had two lesions removed a few weeks ago... one was definitely a mucocele (inside lower lip like everyone else) the other was some sort of blood blister or something located on the outside, center of my upper lip. Biopsy reports came back negative/benign- fortunately. It was a vascular bundle/lesion ie, "Hemangioma or Pyogenic Granuloma". Sun or trauma related, they're really not certain how these suckers form, but some come back after the first removal/excision. Which of course mine did... and within a couple weeks. Long story short, I'm going in for Photoderm/laser surgery to remove it in a couple weeks... hopefully that will do the trick. Guess I should have gone that route to begin with and spared myself the pain of an upper AND lower lip surgical procedure- but hey, what can you do?
Anyway... just a little more info for those wishing to seek it.

Did the lesion and mucocele look very similar? I'm curious to see how many times they are misdiagnosed as each other if they do.
Not really... one looked more like a blood blister... and was on the OUTSIDE of my lip...

Hi I Found This Site While Trying To Search Out What I Have??? Mine Is On The Outside, Right Adjacent To And Part Of The Lower Lip. It Will Grow And I Can Pop It Which Only Produces Blood. It Looks Just Like A Large Zit/cyst But There Is Only Blood. It Really Hurts When I Make It Bleed And Then If I Bleed It For Days It Will Go Back Down To Normal Size And Almost Disappear For A Very Short Time Until It Becomes Large Again. It Is Extremely Annoying. Is This A Mucolele? Does Anybody Know What This Is?
Sounds like I had something very similar to brainfry, and mine looked enough look a mucocele that my dentist, doctor and plastic surgeon all independently concurred in that diagnosis. Well, I guess the surgeon had it as a referral, but the other two anyway.
As my plastic surgeon said beforehand though, the basic treatment would be the same if he thought it was a mucocele or even some kind of cancer, etc. - cut the darned thing out and send it to the lab to make sure.

I had a pyogenic granuloma too. Just got the call from my doctor to confirm. Completely benign. Basically what my doctor told me, and I went to a dermatologist because it was on the outside of my lip, is that basically too many blood vessels go to the area and instead of healing the injury, they get in the way of each other. That's is also why, when the thing would bleed it would bleed like crazy, because it was made up of entirely blood.
My doctor removed it by giving me a shot of Novocaine or something similar, shaving it off and then cauterizing the area. I had a big scab on the area for a few days and then, when the main one fell off, a tiny bump that's been getting smaller and smaller. I had it removed on June 1st and it's almost completely healed. There's still a tiny bump, but that might just be a scar that's staying. Either way, it's not too noticeable.
Anyway, I'm very glad it's gone and so are all my friends who tried to be polite, but couldn't help but get grossed out about it. And then there's my grandmother who wasn't polite at all and asked in the middle of dinner at a restaurant what was wrong with my lip. Thanks, Grandma.
