Mucocele Removed By Painless Surgery

I found this forum to be very informative and I would like to add my experience for everyone. Like many people, I was somewhat concerned when the mucocele first appeared on the left side inside my lower lip. It was roughly 1 cm in diameter and changed in size. It typically swelled up after I ate. The thing was painless but uncomfortable. I let it sit for about 8 to 10 days and when it did not go away, I went to see a doctor. The doctor recommended that I have it removed surgically by going to an oral surgeon. I finally had it removed today (almost a month after it first appeared) while under local anasthesia and the surgery (about 20 to 25 min) was slightly uncomfortable, but not at all painful (they used laser). I did not feel a thing while they punctured the mucocele, drained the yucky goo inside, removed the associated salivary glands and put the stitches on, although I was wide awake during the entire procedure. I could easily drive by myself after the surgery. Post surgical pain has been almost non-existent till now (more than 7 hours after the surgery) but I do have some occasional bleeding from the wound. I have refrained from taking pain-killers till now and am going to stick to liquid foods (smoothies, orange juice) over the weekend. Obtaining a biopsy report is a standard part of the surgical procedure. If you have glasses, it is a good idea to wear them during the surgery for safety. Ask if safety goggles can be provided.

Good to hear things went smoothly for you jabhiji. How are things going now? Do you have all sensation in your lip? Is there any swelling?

I'm curious to see the differences between laser and incisions.

I got mine removed today with a laser. It was NOTHING!!!I had the mucocele for 3 or so months and kept biting it..then when i went to the dentist she referred me to an oral surgeon and he was like oh yeah no biggie we will laser it off. The novacaine was nothing.. the shot was nothing...2 tiny little pricks and thats it.. the laser stunk but oh well.. i felt nothing my whole bottom half of my face was numb.. def go for laser.. seems like the clear choice!

Sensation on the lip returned to normal in a couple of days and there was no noticeable swelling. The painkillers were completely unnecessary for me. I resumed eating normal food after a day or two. The stitches dissolved into the lip tissue and are no longer visible. I would definitely vote for laser based removal and if you are in the Hartford, CT area, I would recommend Dr. Paul C. Peracchio.

What did your mucocele look like....was it one of those raised detached looking things or one of those things that look deeper and not so much on the skins surface but rather underneath?

i.e., did it look like this -

or like this - http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/ce/Mucocele02-17-06cropped.jpg/745px-Mucocele02-17-06cropped.jpg

I can envision laser surgery on the former set but not the latter.....

Spumanti, my mucocele looked quite like the image on the last link in your post. So maybe laser is the way to go even for those "deeper under the surface" buggers.

Hmm....that's good to know, jabhiji....thank you for the info.

Mine looks like yours then. So, just trying to understand...you said they drained they cut and drained the mucocele and removed the salivary gland, so you had stitches. Yet, they used a laser for the removal of the mucocele and the salivary gland? So, they still cut you open with an incision, but used a laser to remove things once opened up?

Jabhiji, were your stitches parrallel to your lip (horazontal) or did they go up and down (vertical)?

I'd like to know if a laser is always a less painful alternative?
