Hello to all.My name is Mary and my mucocele first appeared this February. I went to a dermatologist, gave me some peels and later on I went to an oral surgeon and we had an operation. After a few weeks the cyst reappeared and we did a second one. The doc removed the stitches last saturday and the next day a new cyst appeared a few mm from the last one. Even the doctor doesn't know what to tell me. I'm freaking out!I read on the web that it can be cured with cryosurgery. Can you tell me sth about this method? Is there anyone who had the same complications as me? If yes what did you do? I don't want another surgery, my lip has been through enough!!!!
P.S: Sorry for my mentical vocabulary. I'm Greek you see.
Thanks, Mary

Hello Mara,

The mucocele will frequently re-occur if the surgeon does not remove the associated minor salivary gland. Often the surgeon will remove the associated salivary gland and the adjacent salivary glands just to be certain that the mucocele will not re-occur.

I have not heard much about cryosurgery. I've read more about the CO2 laser ablation and micro-marsupialization. I've heard good things about the laser ablation method. It sounds like laser ablation might not require salivary gland excision....not sure.

I think your first step is to see a different doctor. Try to see an ENT surgeon or a plastic surgeon instead of an oral surgeon.

Good luck to you!!

I also had the mucocele removed twice, once by an oral surgeon and once by a plastic surgeon. It came back after both procedures! I really don't want to do it again! I'm not sure if either surgeon removed the associated salivary gland...

My doc pulled out a fairly large mucocele and showed it to me. He then poked around some more and pulled out a smaller mucocele. That's it, he said. Time to close. I have some minor scar tissue still. But it is no big deal. The mucocele is definitely gone. If you still have a mucocele, another surgery probably is the only option, as distasteful as that may seem. Some docs apparently do not know what they are doing. Other docs know what they are doing and just miss something in good faith that might be hard to see.

Hello there. My name Angela and I can totally relate to alot of the things that have been posted about mucoceles. I tried to do research on this issue and by the time I finished, i was almost convinced that I had oral cancer. I went to the dentist who then reffered me to an oral surgeon. I went to the oral surgeon and he told me it was a mucocele which after 4 months of fretting, I finally got a diagnosis. I went into his office and he gave me a shot and proceeded to cut into my lip to remove it. I will tell you it is not a pleasant surgery. It is not long, but it feels like forever. You go home a little bruised with some stitches and eat ice cream for the next few days. I went back to follow up and the same lump started to appear again. I went to the doctor and he said that it was just some extra soft tissue that was aiding in the healing process, so he gave me another shot and just smoothed over the area with one of his instruments. I was happy because I thought I was finally free of this aweful growth. The darn thing is back again and I am dreading having to go through another surgery.. Anyone out there have any suggestions of any other remedies, or do I have to submit to the knife again??
P.s. Great forum to find out what a mucocele is because I went for months freaking out that I had some disease or oral cancer because no one could give me an answer to what it was. I had people telling me that it was a canker sore and that it would go away, but after 4 moths of dealing with that thing, I was glad to get a diagnosis.
