I had a mucocele removed 2 weeks ago from a very strange location. It was situated on the tissue connecting the two jaws at the back of the molar. It would fill up and drain almost weekly.
The oral surgeon removed it along with the adjacent salivary gland and had it biopsied. It came back as mucocele or at least that is how surgeon interpreted the results. My own Google research showed it might have been caused by a bacteria.
One week later another similar bump appeared 2 - 3 mm from the old one. Went to see the same surgeon and he simply cut it off. Now a week later it is back.
It seems I am one of the recurrent cases and should probably go have the other salivary gland removed as well. I am interested to know how often mucocele sufferers see them come back and if I should possibly look for a surgeon that uses laser to remove them. Thanks,

Hi, I am not familiar with the laser. I had the usual surgery and two of the little buggers were removed from the same site. End of story. No more mucoceles. No recurrent mucoceles. From what I have bee told, I think the buggers (the glands) do need to be completely removed or the mucocele has not really been removed or taken out of action. When I read about people who had surgery but the gland was not removed, I am always left scratching my head about the doctors.
The oral surgeon did remove one salivary glad and had it biopsied. I am wondering now if there was another one that should have been removed or if one got damaged during the surgery itself.

I am having mine removed on Monday (Nov 26th). The Oral Surgeon said the textbooks say there is around a 20% reoccurance rage, however he has yet have one come back if he has removed it. He did say that the laser is a bit cleaner, so that tends to avoid any further damage. I feel pretty confident with him. I will let everyone know my results after it is done.
