Possible Mucocele On Soft Palette

I have had a small blister clear like thing on my soft pallet / throat area since about May. I went to both a dentist and an oral surgeon today and both suggested mucocele.

The dentist suggested waiting 6 months and seeing if it goes away. He says it can and right now it is rather small so he says it could go away if I just stop touching it and try to eat softer foods.

For the past two months it has come and gone like every 12 hours. 12 hours gone -- 12 hours back. It does seem to come back if I eat. I am going to guess that any touching it makes it get inflamed. After a day of doctors pushing on it -- it is very big.

The oral surgeon suggested taking it off right away. The oral surgeon IMHO was very rude. And offered me no real explanations to any of my questions. Given where it is he said novacane is out and I will have to be sedated via IV. I have never been sedated before. His exact words to me where "well it could be a mucus cyst but without removing it I can't tell for sure."

I am scared to have it taken off. Right now -- on my soft pallet it is very uncomfortable (feels like I have food stuck in my throat) and I can't imagine surgery on that area and it not healing perfectly. I have seen lasers remove these things -- how can I find that?

Also at work right now I can't take time off until about September. So I was thinking maybe I would make the appointment for late September and go though with it if the mucocle doesn't go away.

Has anyone else had it on the soft pallet? I get scared it could get so big it might block my air way. The dentist told me to come back right away if it got significantly bigger.

Sounds like you know about as much as I do.

But don't go to the rude guy. If he's rude, will he care enough for you to do a good job?

Do find someone else.

Hi there,

My mucocele is on the soft palate as well and it behaves in the same way as yours. I have already had one surgery and a salivary gland was removed but now I have another mucocele right next to it (2 weeks after surgery) that is larger than the original one.

I have an appointment this Monday with the oral surgeon (same one) to look into it and possibly operate again.

Where on the soft palate is yours located?

I am not exactly sure -- on the right side near where my upper jaw ends if I was to open my mouth.

How was the surgery? Easy or hard? Tx

The surgery itself was easy. It took 20 - 25 minutes and was performed by the oral surgeon. You will feel stitches and be a bit sore around the incision for a week or so. Overall I think that the surgery was not an issue and I would be a happy camper if the mucocele did not reappear few millimeters over to the right. I think I will go for another surgery on Monday.

Did you have to be sedated?

I am sorry yours has grown back. That is one reason I don't want to get the surgery. What I fear though is that the oral surgeon was all like "without taking it off I can't know what it is" so he left that doubt that it is a mucocele. That is going to drive me nuts. Is yours in anyway white looking. When I look at it without light it looks like a white thing -- when I look at it with light it looks clear.
