So this lovely bump in my upper lip was removed this morning - thank god. The surgeon said he believed it was an infected mucocele (the infection I guess is my own fault for trying to pop it)
Anyway, I have never had sugery or stitches before. When the shot wore off all at once my lip hurt like hell.. I took the pain pill and ate but now I think my lip is swollen bigger than before the surgery!!!! Its kinda numb now too. The doc didn't prescribe antibiotics, just pain meds and a medicated mouth rinse. How can I tell if the area with stitches gets infected since its discolored anyway?

Generally, infected sites will be red, puffy, oozy etc. and look terrible. If the area AROUND your site is discolored, swollen, etc., that's probably fine. I am not a doctor, by the way, but that's my experience. I recently had a mucocele removed and my doc did not even mention that I would be bruised all different colors, swollen for days, in pain for days, etc. I also did not have antibiotics. Your experience sounds like what I went through. Just keep an eye out for the stitch site itself. For me, even despite all that was going on around it, the stitch site always looked good. In fact, now - 7 days later - there isn't even a scar, and the tissue looks the same as the rest of my mouth.
I can't really look at the stitches well because they are on the inside of the top lip. My surgeon actually called to check up on me after I posted last night and he doesn't seem too concerned.
What's bothering me is its swollen HUGE! That and if he thought it was infected why didn't he prescribe antibiotics? *sigh* I will update in a few days, thanks for the response!
