Plastic Surgeon? Oral Surgeon? Dentist?

Kk, new here to the forum but obviously not to the "lump in the mouth", "bubble blister", or "Mucocele."

Around the beginning of summer i was out at In and Out where i was eating a nice double double. I had bitten my left lower lip a couple times before, but not hard enough to where it would do much damage. I'd get an occassional canker sore, but that was it. WELL, that night (and my friends can attest), i began my journey of the mucocele disasterous path. I bit my lip hella hard to the point where i knew it was harder than i ever had before. I mean it hurt like ouch. Well, typical story, about a week later it turned into a canker sore, then went away, but kinda felt swolen. Well, it kept on swelling. And swelling. And swelling. But all of this on a very minimal scale. Finally it felt like this lump that was just annoying as heck. I mean it was there for about month and a half till i finally took a needle to it and "drained" the sucker. It felt alot better after this and i thought it went away. Well, it naturally came back, but not as big. So i repeated the procedure about two weeks after that. Well about the 3rd time when i did it, i got the sucker good to where it seemed like this tissue was hanging out. I figured it might be the source of my problm (like a zit or something) so i proceeded to pull it out with tweezers... turned out it wouldn't come out easily and even looked like it was tearing so i just left it. Now i'm back to phase one just like 2 times annoying. It's actually like a bubble now visible with the blood inside and slight blueish pigment.

I want this thing gone. It's been about 3 months now and it's becomming unbearable (the annoyance that is). I'd preferably like to wait to get a surgery till about the beginning of next year or something, or sometime in between semesters, but i want it out nonetheless.

I haven't seen a doctor yet to get it diagnosed but i'm almost positive it is a mucocele. I'll be visiting one in about a month here so i'll get it official then.

My question is, who should i go to in order to have it removed? Plastic Surgeon? Oral Surgeon? Dentist? Or simply just a doctor? Any recommendations would help. Also, if anybody lives around the San Diego/SoCal area who had one removed successfully, please refer me to whoever did it for you! Especially if you have any relations to the military (as i go to the military installations to get my work done).

thanks

Hey Proto
I'm no in the San Diego area, but I am in the military. I ended up being sent to the oral surgeon here at the base in Norfolk, VA and I think it was the best experience I've ever had with military medical personnel. Hopefully, this is the case in your area as well, but of course it does vary. So I rec the oral surgeon. I know a lot of people on this site swear by plastic surgeons, though. I guess just make sure that the person who's doing it has done it before. Being in the military, you don't get much choice in the matter. I was a guinea pig for a dental intern. But again, very good experience.

Because my lip ended up disfigured I would suggest a plastic surgeon who will be concerned about the way it looks after the surgery if your mucocele is on or near your lips. If it is in further your mouth you could probably go to an oral surgeon.

I agree with Ackhelp... I have my dentist look at mine, which is further in my mouth, and he suggested an oral surgeon, but did mention if I did have one close to my lip to have a plastic surgeon take care of it. I will most likely be having it removed after the Holidays.

I happen to work for a husband/wife Plastic Surgeon/Dermatologist office. So, when I first bit the inside corner of my mouth really hard and a few days later noticed this thing growing on my inside cheek right where the lips meet, I asked the dermatologist and she told me what it was and said the plastic surgeon was the one to take it off. So, I get it taken off in a few days. I'm not too worried, but after reading all these messages, I'm glad that I don't have to worry about figuring out who to go to to have it taken off. Our Physician Assistant was kind of excited about it as she had only seen one other one since she's started. She is looking forward to watching the procedure!

ProtoFunc...I can help...

1) Oral surgeon ...and the oral sureons at 32nd st. naval base are excellent. I had one taken off there, and although the little bastard came back, I feel they did a great job.

2) I also went to Dr. Richard Mowry, an oral surgeon in Chula Vista. He finally got it all, and is a great and very understanding oral surgeon. You'll need a referral to get in and see him the first time, but he's worth it...and takes tricare
