I believe I to have one of these dreaded lumps, it came about after I bit the fire out of my lower lip, while chewing gum, I will never chew gum again. The next day I noticed a blister on the corner inside of my lower lip. It has been about six weeks now and it is still there, although it has changed several times. I poped it a couple of times and I got quite happy thinking it was going away, but after a few days filled back up again. What is the best thing to do for it, leave it alone and let it pop on its own or pop it yourself? And is there any alternative to surgery? Also is there any rinse that helps shrink this thing.
Just wanted to ask one more question, I have Kaiser Insurance, should I get a referal from a doctor there to see an oral surgeon? I don't really have dental insurance, I just go to California Dental, which is a little lower in cost. Does anyone know how that would work. Thanks

If you keep on popping it you risk infection and scar tissue. Get it removed once and for all.
I don't agree with all the posters who immediately suggest going to a doctor and getting your bump cut out. Some posters complained about numbness or minor deformity in their lip after the surgery.
I had mucocele awhile ago and it went away on its own. I popped it 3-4 times throughout the duration I had it. (Probably a month or so) and it came back twice but after the third time it disappeared on its on. (I also decided not to pop it anymore after the 3rd attempt so I don't know whether the draining worked or because I didn't aggravate it further )
In addition I took antibiotics which shrank the mucocele down to a small pimple just prior to it disappearing.
From what I know about a mucocele it's an infection in your lip and thats why the antibiotics work by shrinking it. When you drain it, the liquid comes out but the germs are still in the area and therefore cause the bump to appear again. Thus it's somewhat hard to get rid of.
My suggestion to you would be to either give it some time and don't mess around with it and see if it will go away on its own
Or drain it and rinse your mouth with saline (salt + water) solution and keep your mouth as clean as possible for a few days and see if it starts to diminish.
Good luck with it. I think surgical intervention is only warranted if you've exhausted all your choices and really want to get rid of the thing and knowing full well the implications of what might happen if you get it surgically removed.

Just wanted to report that my dreaded mucocele finally went away after almost 3 months. I had a dentist appointment and she said that it could be removed in her office, just had to make the appointment. I decided to give it a couple of weeks more and rince and brush more often, and much to my surprise and delight it went away on its own after about a week. I really think that rinseing with moutwash was the thing that did it, also being very careful not to bite it, I think these things must have some infection in them and take a really long time to clear up. I think that letting it clear up naturally is always the best policy.
I'm wondering, is it really expensive to have it removed? I have 3 lower lip piercings and luckily the one I have is placed between 2 of them..should I have it removed do you think it would screw them up?
