Third Mucocele

I just had my second surgery on Monday, which was supposed to just be my follow up for the first, and now a third mucocele, about 4 mm in diameter has appeared on the bottom tip of my scar tissue. I was on evening primrose oil for a week, but apparently that's useless.

The second mucocele appeared on the top tip of the scar tissue that resulted from the first excision and created a bump where my lips meet, so it was visible on the outside. At least that's now gone and the third is tucked inside my mouth. I'd be more willing to live with this than the last one as long as it doesn't get any bigger, which is doubtful given that it's directly facing my bottom teeth and could easily be banged up again.

I imagine that since the tips of the scar tissue were protruding and tender, the slightest impact could cause another one to appear. Is it possible the mucocele will disappear as the scar tissue settles down?

Anything is possible but for me it hasn't gone away. My mucocele arose because I had tissue taken from inside my lower lip to use as a graft elsewhere. A while later the scar healed and a mucocele formed. I had it removed 2 and a half years ago only for another smaller one to appear. This one is high up and visible and I was to have it removed when other events overtook it and I had to postpone it. So I'm still living with it and it's got no better in all that time.

Like Ann...my "little friend" came a long as a result of some other tissue removal from my soft palate.

recurrence....unfortunately there are no promises....they may come back again and again, or as my oral surgeon said, they may just "burn themselves out".

Any damage or irritation that affects even the smallest salivary gland can bring these beasts out. Just keep the faith, and work with your surgeon to make a comfortable decision.

I posted on "Mucocele gone with salt" after this post here how this third mucocele healed after doing the salt rinses.

I actually had a fourth one appear on another location along my scar tissue and that responded immediately to the salt as well. With this fourth one I stopped doing the salt rinses before the dead layer of skin completely disappeared only to have the bubble re-inflate. I then started the rinses again, with an immediate response, but kept up the rinses until there was no more dead tissue, and now it's gone. Yay!

I also found my scar tissue diminished a lot quicker than after my first surgery, so hopefully it's no longer prone to getting any more. Right now I'm completely free of the buggers.

(In all instances the mucocele was deflated before I started the rinses, which I think makes a difference. I'll admit it - with the fourth one I deflated it myself, using everything I could think of to keep things clean including the salt rinse itself. Risky still, I know.)
