how common is laser removal?

I have a mucocele inside my lower lip, its been there about two months and is not going away, might even be getting a little bigger. At least, it seems to be "harder" than it was. It's the "deep" kind, not the "surface" kind.

I saw my dentist first, then later my family doctor. Dentist about a month ago said I could wait and see if it goes away, if not he would refer me to an oral surgeon. Doctor about a week ago said he didn't think it would go away, and referred me to a E-N-T who is also a plastic surgeon.

This week I saw the oral surgeon referred by my dentist, and wasn't too impressed with him (for numerous reasons I won't go into... some being just personality differences.) I had already informed myself about mucoceles through this site and other information on the internet, including some medical study abstracts. He didn't tell me *how* the procedure would be done, so I asked specifically if he used a laser or just cut it out. He gave a bunch of reasons why he wouldn't use the laser for this, but he mostly seemed to contrast this with other things that would be "burned" out (e.g. flap of skin that needs to be removed, etc.) This made me think he wasn't talking about a cutting laser but instead a burning laser. He said I would have stitches and it would take 3-5 days to recover, a lot depends on the individual. I left the consultation without scheduling anything yet.

Anyway, I have the appointment with the ENT/plastic surgeon coming up, referred by my doctor. If he says he doesn't use a laser either, do I go look for yet another surgeon? Each of these appointments is taking time to schedule and at this rate I feel like I won't be able to get the procedure done for a month!

I'm not particularly squeamish, I've had lots of dental surgery, root canals, etc.. but on the other hand I'm not looking forward to this lip surgery, I'm afraid its going to bleed a lot and I'm also afraid of scarring afterwards or that the doc will botch something (no, I'm not very trusting of other people..) The advantages of the laser method seem pretty good.

How common is the laser surgery and is it REALLY worth my holding out for finding someone who does it? I really like the way this jabhiji's procedure went:

If I lived in CT instead of PA, I'd definitely see that doc.

I have not messed with it at all myself (doc told me not to), nor have I even accidentally bitten it, but I've been careful. I wish that it would just go away on it's own, but I understand that's not realistic.

Saw the second doctor today. He's an Ear-Nose-Throat guy, also a Plastic Surgeon, an MD. He said he doesn't use a laser.
So now I'm stuck deciding whether to just go with this guy anyway (I liked his demeanor and experience, generally) or keep trying to find someone who uses laser. My mucocele is getting bigger and I'm afraid the longer I delay, perhaps more stitches will be required and longer recovery....
Probably I'll just schedule with this guy.
Wish me luck.
(I'm kinda disappointed that nobody replied to this post at all.)

Hi Middleageguy, I had a mucocele myself, It lasted for almost three months, why don't you give it a little more time, they take a really long time to go away. I saw a dentist and she was going to remove it, just had to make another appointment. I decided to go home and wait a little more time, Started brushing more often and gargeling with mouthwash more often, also leave it alone, I couldn't believe it went away within two more weeks. And to think I almost got it removed surgically, so glad I decided to wait.
