Freaked out about unusual lump in mouth

I was surfing the web one morning when I felt an unusual lump on my left bottom lip. The lump was not painful at all and I didnt even remember biting my lip.So like any other person would do I played with it with my tongue and checked it every time I went to the restroom. It drove me nuts not knowing what it was. My anxiety level was through the roof thinking it might be the big c word. My bump started out red and kind of long at first and as the weeks went on it got bigger and bigger. One night I was at work and it seemed to be almost gone. I was very happy to see it was going away.Well to my surprise it came back with a vengence twice the size as it was before. I immediately called the dentist for a consultation. This was week number 7. The dentist examined it and said he thought it might be a mucocele but decided to drain it. I think the dentist thought he was at the dinner table as he poked my lip repeatedly. By the time he was done my bump was very purple and looked like roast beef. To his delight the oral surgeon from downstairs had wanted to talk to him so he called him in to examine my lump. This oral surgeon having over 30 years experience took a little look at it and said ohh its just a mucocele. He explained to me how they get there and that there was a .05 chance of them going away on there own. So off to the oral surgeons office I went to ste up an appointment. The lady at the desk said oh we have an opening 2 weeks away and I said NO I want this thing out of my lip yesterday. She found me an opening 2 days later. Of course I had dental insurance but they wanted to be paid $275.00 up front. I didnt have $275.00 so I told my wife to call them the next day to see if we could get a better deal since I had insurance. The lady behind the desk was quoting me for health insurance not dental insurance. She told my wife it would be $75.00. I said SOLD! So after working all night the night before doing inventory I showed up for my appointment at 8:30. The nurse lady came in the room and said lets take your blood presure. Of course it was 143 over something else high. I told the nurse my blood pressure is usualy around 110. She said look at the chair your in , nobody wants to be here. I laughed as my blood pressure rose steadily. The young Oral surgeon came in and I said wheres the older surgeon. They told me he was getting ready to retire. Thinking I was getting the best I started to freak out. I asked him what the odds are this will go away on its own and he held up a big O with his fingers. I took a big gulp as he exmined the lump. He said " yeah we can get this out today". He then told me that I could have a little numbness on my lip for up to 6 months and that there was an 8 percent chance the surgery coul create another mucocele. I said lets do it and he brought in a needle bigger then my arm. Just kidding but it was big. He told me this would be the most pain I would feel throughout the surgery and then he shot me up with local anesetics. I said thats it and he said that I was tough. Then came in the paperwork. Sign these 2 pages if we permananly damage you and so on. I signed without hesitation knowing that all places do that to cover there butts. So off to the cutting he went. He pulled out the mucocele and said it was the biggest he had seen all year. Great Im thinking.Anyways to sum it all up the surgery was nothing. The oral surgeon did tell me he took his time to give me an understitch because he had plastic surgery experince. I appreciated that. Im now on day 3 and one stitch did fall out. It became loose on day 2 but I wasnt to concerned about it. The oral surgeon did call me the night of my operation to make sure everything was ok. I asked him about the whits tip of the scar and he said it was just the access skin not to worry. The pain was pretty strong right after the local wore off but only for a few hours. I had light blood and purple bruising. It was difficult to eat hard foods but I just took my time. Anyone out there with this strage thing I recommend going to the oral surgeon not the doctor. We all make things worse in our minds then what they really are. It was a pain in the butt for me but im glad its almost over.
Just got back from my post op appointment and found out that it was only a mucocele. Hurray!!!!Healing is coming along just nicely and starting to eat more hard and bigger foods. Swelling is gone and had 2 stitches come out.Oral surgeon said all looks good.
i have these 2 small lumps that have just appeared at the back of my mough they dnt hurt at all but they are annoying i cna feel them wen i swallow is there anyone who could shed some light as wot this could be?
I wouldnt worry to much about them unless they start to get bigger or if there becoming some sort of problem. If worried you could always go see the dentist or dr.
gladitsover....replace "left lower lip" with soft palate, and it sounds like my story...except I had to have 2 removals...the little bastard came back.
nina....it
s real difficult to tell someone not to worry...I'm a bit hypochondriac, so I worry about everything. Bottom line...if you're worried/focused on them...go see your dentist.

gladitsover, thank you for posting your thorough and somewhat humorous story. I'm in the military and the dentist I went to made a big deal out of it and told me it had to come out TODAY. Of course since nothing happens fast in the Navy, this did concern me. And then the oral surgeon who did my removal HAD NEVER DONE ONE BEFORE! He had an experienced surgeon in with him offering remarks as he cut me open. I pretty much got a play-by-play commentary of my whole surgery.
Glad to hear you made it through mostly whole. :-)
