Halls...Yes, Halls...

2 weeks ago marked the start of my vacation and prior to leaving on vacation I had a minor cold of which I was supressing the symptoms with Halls "extra strong" losenges. The morning of my flight I woke up, dressed and drove to the airport chugging back coffee as usual and all of the sudden, realized I had this weird lump in the lower corner of my lip. At first I wasn't too worried about it and thinking it was some weird nighttime lip bitting thing I played with it and kept going. Woke up the next morning in my vacation spot, brushed my teeth and the damn little thing was still there...I tried looking at it but it just looked like, well...nothing but a little lump. It grew and shrunk periodicly throughout my vacation and when I got back home to internet access I started looking up things that it may be...all things considered, it really sounded like this Mucocele thing but I don't remember bitting my lower lip...as time and research went on, I read that a lot of them occur when kids suck thier lip in through thier teeth...I hav never done anything like that but I still keyboard diagnosed it as a Mucocele...then my cold returned and I was back on the Halls...after about 10 minutes time sucking on the halls when the center of it disappears leaving a little doughnut shaped halls in my mouth I realized what had caused this lumpy Mucocele...completely inately, I was sucking my lower lip though the hole in the halls in the exact spot where this lump was making it feel awful weird...

Anyway...word to the wise, when treating colds with Halls, don't suck your lower lip through the little hole that appears...I still havn't decided what I am going to do anout it. I was on deaths doorstep last summer with a ruptured and subsequently removed spleen and that was enough surgery for my lifetime...any ideas what can happen if you just leave it?

hey bubbleboy-

If you just leave it, the mucocele will probably get bigger over time. Mine started small on my bottom right lip, and then fluctuated in size over the course of a year before I finally decided to have it removed because it ultimately became too large. At worst it's an annoying lump that rubs on your teeth all day as you talk or chew and at best it's a bump that you don't even notice unless you actively search for it.

Damn those halls!

Well...after doing absoloutly nothing for almost a week except completely stopped playing with the thing, it has now shrunk to almost nothing but a tiny bump and barely noticable so at this point...I'm just going to continue my treatment of "no treatment" as it seems to be working well. I think the more you play with it, the more it's irritated and the bigger it gets. Leave the damn thing alone and it starts to go away...???...no brainer!

Unfortunately...it came back and 100 fold...it's interferring with my speech and eating and it looks like I'll try the listerine thing first but...seeing the doctor this week!

Shame. Getting it cut out isn't too big a deal. Good luck.

Well...My 22 month old son and I were wrestling on the bed this morning and he was putting "the squeezy hug" move on me when...I felt this kind of tingley feeling and a squirt of fluid...gave the muke a run over with the tongue and it was popped...there was a little clear fluid as well as some small bits clotted blood that drained from it and now it's still there but no where near as large, hard or in the way. Either way...I'm going to have it removed...can I post pictures here or is it too gross?

Now that your mucocele is popped the rinse treatments (salt or listerine) should work better. If you do notice an improvement, don't stop until the thing's completely gone - not a speck.

Getting it cut out is far from major surgery, but it does create a small annoyance and a minuscule chance of complications.

Update...

Was at the dentist 2 weeks ago for a routine cleaning and the night before, it popped again and I immediately started the listerine treatment...it's 2 weeks later and I can BARELY feel it there anymore...
