I've had my mucocele for about 3 months. I remember biting my lower lip a few times in the past but this time I can't say. So it took me at least 1 month to discover what it was and then another few weeks to see a dentist. Unfortunatly, she could not do anything for me and referred my case to an oral surgeon. I had to wait another 6 weeks to see that surgeon. Meanwhile, the thing grew and grew. I could not understand why the only option offered was the surgical removal of the gland and why nobody had something else to propose...Two weeks ago, I was desperate; I was biting it at every meal, it showed when I spoke, when I smiled, I was always thinking about it or touching it with my tongue. Then I discovered this forum, and someone explained that laser could be an option. I made many phone calls and then found only one dentist who was willing to see me. One week later I finally met him; he put some laser on it to localize the obstruction of the canal, drained it (the saliva in the cyst had become thick and could not drain by itself) in about 20 minutes. No pain, no medication, just a big relief. It was like after the delivery of a baby, with a big soft belly (but somehow smaller than before). I saw him wednesday, thursday, friday and the next monday et wednesday for 5 minutes of laser therapy each time. The mucocele (wich was soooo big, about 1-2 cm2) got smaller each time, and today was my last day of treatment. It is almost disappeared now, and I take care of it (I don't want to bite it). The dentist told me to not sleep on by stomach but on my back to avoid squeezing any gland. I live in Canada and I have insurance, so it cost me about 25 $ per treatment, for a total of 150 $ to get rid of it. I hope it will last!!!

My son has one of these awful things too. We live in Toronto, and he is an actor coming up to his small window of time in which to earn money for second year drama school. How did you find this laser treatment and by some luck was it in Toronto?
Also, did you have a lot of visible swelling or scarring?
I would really appreciate your feedback!!!
Thanks so much.

Dear jmum,
unfortunately for you, I live in Quebec City (Quebec). But I'm sure that you can find a dentist in Toronto who has the laser and can treat mucoceles. I found mine by looking in the "yellow pages" of the Quebec's telephone directory. Some dentists were announcing that they have laser technique (bust most of the time, they use it for diagnosis and treatment of cavities). I called 5 or 6 offices and they all told me that they could not treat mucoceles with laser. I called an ENT who told me it was impossible to do it with laser. But the last dentist I called said he was able to do something for me, and gave me an appointment the next day! I have to admit I had big doubts...But as I said before, it was not painful, I have no scar (only a tiny tiny bump, so small I don't feel it). My gland is now re-opened and functional. So far so good. The most important thing is that the improvement was radical after only one treatment and that I had no swelling. You can visit this dentist's website (www.marcandregagnon.ca) (I hope you can read french) and maybe he could refer you to another in the Toronto area. Good luck!

Dear guinessrecord,
Thank you so much for your response and your initial posting of your experience!
I have an appointment booked this coming Monday for my son and have spoken to the oral surgeon who said in 95% of cases there is minimal swelling. He uses a laser and does these a lot. I never would have know had it not been for your information! My son had been referred to an ENT and the doctor's office felt that really cosmetics would not be the main focus, although who knows and it wouldn't have been for another couple of months!
Given that I had even heard of these things I'm also really glad that this site exists.
The surgeon we're using doesn't get a stellar rating on RateMDs.com, (a site I was unaware of that may be helpful to others), but the comments are around prices and punctuality not ability so I'm not too worried.
I'll let you know how it goes and once again, THANK YOU!

My son had the surgery a couple of weeks ago and it would appear that there is a partial reoccurence. It is not as big but there is definitely a puff happening again. Surgery was about $500 and hopefully some will be recouped on a dental plan. He has a follow-up appointment as well as an audition, it doesn't show as much but we live with some fear that it will get big again.
How frustrating!
Interesting to note, I'm not sure where I saw this but tartar fighting toothpaste is definitely out! I have thrown all tubes of this approved toothpaste away.
If anyone has any further info it is much appreciated. I will post again after the follow up.

Hello jmum,

I also live in Toronto and have a mucocele in my bottom lip. Who is the oral surgeon who performed the laser therapy on your son and where is he located? Many thanks!

Hello Frogqueen,
His name is Doctor Prussin, Ellesmere and Kennedy. If that's not enough to find him, just let me know as I'm without paperwork at the moment. He did a second procedure on my son and it appears to have worked. It isn't just laser though, he does a bit of both. My son had a couple of stitches, and the he used the laser for the saliva duct, swelling was minimal and did the second procedure right away at his check up. My son did feel at the first one as if not everything was gone and this time he feels it is absolutely. For the second there was virtually no swelling. Neither time was there much pain to speak of.
Good luck, they're just an awful thing. I hope you have success with this.
Let me know.
P.S. I also thought he was a very nice and thoughtful doctor.
