Thank you for creating this site. It was a huge relief when I found it and saw that other people were going through the same thing I was. I tend to freak out very easily, and your stories helped to calm my nerves.
So I figure it's about time I've shared my story. It was a little less than 2 years ago that I got my first mucocele. I was 25 and I had never seen anything like it before. It was HUGE and very noticable every time I opened my mouth. I'm still not sure how I got it, since I don't recall having bitten my lip or anything like that. I went to my family doctor, and he had no idea what it was and made a quick call to his ENT buddy, who said that it was most likely a mucocele. My doctor recommended that I get an ENT to remove it, but it was such a pain to find one that would take me in a reasonable amount of time. And I was a bit impatient, because, like I said, this thing was HUGE. Like, it was preventing me from eating and talking normally, not to mention how horrible it looked (it was right at the top of my lower lip). Eventually, my family doctor got his ENT friend to fit me in that week to take a look at it. The guy took a look at it and said that it was too large to remove in his office and wanted to do the surgery at the hospital, knocking me out and everything. Now, it was pretty large, but in retrospect, I really wish I hadn't went along with it, because it cost me a fortune. And after all that, it CAME BACK. I was so disappointed...
Fortunately, right around the time it started to come back, I was scheduled to have my wisdom teeth removed. I mentioned it to the oral surgeon who was taking out my wisdom teeth, and she said that she would be able to remove it, no problem. So after my mouth healed up a bit from the tooth extraction, I had the mucocele removed again. It was still really large and in the same exact place as before. So, she took it out, it healed up nicely, and for a couple of months everything seemed to be okay...
But one day, right next to the scar of the last one, I saw another one forming. Gah! I was able to call my oral surgeon, though, and she fit me in right away to have it removed. And then I was good for another 6 months or so...
But then I got ANOTHER one. This one was totally unrelated ot the first one (two? three?) and was in a completely different spot. Unlike the previous ones, I do recall biting my lip for this one. Again, though, my oral surgeon was able to remove it right away. By this time, I was fine with her just numbing my lip and snipping it out (it was a bit smaller than the original, at least!).
So, that was about a year ago. Things had been going pretty well until a couple of days ago. Looks like I bit my lip again (I'd had some dental work done, and they'd been adjusting my bite, so I suspect that has something to do with the increased lip biting, since I never really used to do that). Last night I noticed a tiny white bubble on my lower lip, much smaller than before, but I've still got a bad feeling that it's yet another mucocele. I know I probably shouldn't have, but I ended up having to puncture it because it kept getting caught in between my two bottom front teeth, which was really painful. I'm gonna give it a couple of weeks to see what happens, but chances are that I'll be looking at oral surgery #5 sometime soon. I'm really hoping it's able to resolve itself on its own, though, since all these surgeries can get pretty expensive!
Thanks for listening to my story, guys. Best of luck to all of you!
