I finally popped it.

After hearing today that I wouldn't be able to have my dentist look at this lump in my mouth because he is out of the country, I was fed up with the bump (which I assume to be a Mucocele) on my lower lip. So I tried popping it after I heard the news, but couldn't work up the courage to do it myself. Throughout the rest of the day, I was just bothered by the stupid thing doing simple, everyday tasks like talking and eating.

At about 11 pm, I finally popped it by using Hydrogen Peroxide, a safety pin, Listerine, and some hand sanitizer. It was really difficult to pop it actually. It's not like popping a zit. You actually need to use some muscle and a steady hand to break through the sac. First you break through a soft skin layer that surrounds the sac, then you get to the tough part where the fluid is. Looking back on my at home procedure, it really did not hurt at all. You kind of have to feel around for a spot that doesn't hurt when you gently push the needle against the bump to avoid pain.

Right now it feels like I'm missing something, seeing that I spent a month with my latest friend. I tried the "Hey just wait it out method". (I'm too impatient to wait more than a month). That just made it bigger. So using the anger of not being able to see my dentist for another month, I finally popped it.

Though I may feel relieved right now, I have a bad feeling that it is going to come back just like some of the other users on this forum have said. I'll be sure to update as the week goes by.

okay so it has been about a week since i popped it. There is no longer a bump at all and you can't even notice that anything was there. I recommend popping it on your own before you go and pay money to get it removed. If it comes back after you pop it, then maybe you should go get it checked out.

Do let us know if it returns! I know many people try to pop it on their own and it dissapears for a while only to return later. You could be a lucky one! :)

So it's been about 3 weeks now. NO MUCOCELE! I still think that you should try popping it at least once. so hey, if it comes back, then get it removed. It can't hurt to try getting rid of it yourself, so you have a chance to save some money and avoid surgery.

Looking back, the hardest part is working up the courage to stick a needle through your lip. haha. Good luck!

Hi, I agree. Try popping the bugger if it truly is a mucocele. And it really did not take a lot of courage for me because I was so sick of the thing. It felt good sticking it to the thing, so to speak. With my first mucocele, popping the thing did not cure the situation as the thing kept coming back. I kept popping it ever few days up to the time I had my successful surgery over a year ago. No problems at that site since then, other than a bit of scar tissue.

I got my second mucocele in another place in my mouth a few weeks ago after biting down on it a couple of times. I was really worried that I would have to go in for another surgery and kind of had resigned myself to that fate. But I decided to pop the thing as soon as I noticed it. I then applied some of the products that a person can get over the counter for what are called canker sores. I also swished some Listerine around every once in awhile. Anyway, I ended up popping the thing maybe three times and day by day I noticed that thing less and less. At this point, I am declaring victory. The mucocele has been gone for about two weeks and the site where it was located looks completely normal now. So I count myself very lucky and am trying to slow down when I am eating now to avoid further errant bites.

That is what I would call the perfect way of handling a mucocele. Actually, I was at the dentist yesterday for my six month cleaning, so I asked about my mucocele that I popped and if it was the right thing to do. My dentist told me that what I did was perfectly fine, seeing that if I would have gone in, he would have done the same thing. He reminded me that it is a blocked salivary duct which allows the lip to build up with calcium, causing the lump.

So, by popping it, I saved some money and the hassle of going to the dentist. Again, I still recommend popping it by yourself before going in, especially now that I know my dentist agrees with me.

yes, that's what I did and i made sure i couldn't feel the hard ball anymore in my lip.

but i have bad news. It's been about 4 months since i popped it, and yeah... it's back.

I'm going to pop it again and see what happens.

I first got the whole mucocele about 3 or 4 years ago. And its been on and off. It normally grows over night and I always get it in my lower inner lip. It does not become that big, its like the size of a zip or pipmle on your face. And everytime I get it, I pop it and silvia usaully comes out of it, then it shrinks for the rest of the day. I get it occiasionally, most during winter, I don't know why. At first I thought it had to do with sharing lip glosses. Because sisters just use my lip gloss with out me knowing, and I just use on my lips too. So I stopped sharing lip glosses, and there it goes again. So I tried a different alternative, which is puting on carmex before heading to bed, and it worked a few times. Then the night I forget to use carmex it happens again. Sometimes I would get two of them on my lip, like this morning, and I popped it again. And now I can feel it when I am about to grow one.

Oh wow, i've never heard of using carmex before. I should try that.

I just tried popping mine again today, but for some reason I can't get this one to pop. I think it is too small, and everytime the needle touches it, it moves it out of the way. So i'm just basically mutilating my lip.

I'm using this thing called Kank-A to maybe try and heal all the holes i poked in my lip. So i'll see how that works. I'm just really sick of these things.

Keep poking at it and you're gonna have a lip ful of scar tissue...

yeah, i know that. i only tried for a little bit, and then gave up, but for some reason it went away again. I think it just swells up every once and a while. It's really not as much as a problem.

so i'm happy. and no scar tissue either.

Khan....the "surgery", when weighing all the odds, is relatively simple. If this thing is really bugging you, surgery is the only way to make it go away...unless you get lucky and it decides to go away on it's own and never come back.

Hi, read everyones experiences and mine is similar. Got mucocel bottom lip, had oral surgeon remove it and 4 mo. later.. Helllo!! Came back and crazier than ever. SO now I have my scar tissue from the first one, and this bump that slowly started to grow but it is spread out, kind of like a kidney bean and there is scar tissue underneath. Lip looks normal, completely. But it is numb in that area and it just gets bigger. I feel that the bounderies after the surgery is messed up and that is why this is so 'not round'. Tried to pop the sucker twice. Stuck myself 4 times different areas but I only get blood when I squeeze it. Is it supposed to be clear and could this be something else. P.S. My dr. knows crap, he said I am fine and it is scar tissue when I went to him immediately. Primary Dr. said its fine, dont worry. ENT looked at it and said,"yup, its a mucocel". 3 opinions, all of them are too busy to be bothered. Now the numbness spreads lower in my chin and nose. Any body who can relate?

Apparently they're supposed to "pluck" out other salivary glands around the mucocele to prevent new ones forming. The surgery itself can damage these surrounding salivary glands and damage to salivary glands is exactly what causes mucoceles!

I just had to have a mucocele removed after 3 months of popping, squeezing, & biting. I finally created its own drain hold but it would still fill up every couple of hours and I would have to bite down to get the gooey out of it. I am glad I finally had removed it was torturing my existance. I was ready to perform my own surgery it was so bad.
