Mucocele...problem for musicians

Hi,

One of my friends (professionial trumpet player) has had a mucous extravasation cyst for over 3 weeks. It is on THE INSIDE of his lower lip and very small (like a little pebble). But it has prevented him from being able to play trumpet which has been HORRIBLE...since not only is it his true love in life but also his job!!

He recruited me, a boring med student, to help him get rid of this stupid cyst! I contacted over 20 dermatologists, oral surgeons, and dentists!

-one dermatologist suggested a "kenalog" or steroid injection. but right now we're very hesitant to inject anything into his lips since I have read that it makes it much worse before it gets better... remember he is a trumpet player and his lips are *precious* :) Has anyone had any success with this... your lips are not numb right? no lasting puffiness?

-He has seen a couple of oral surgeons (that are at the top of their field) and the best one decided it was probably best to not take it out either with laser or scalpel. This is probably because it is so small and on the inside of his lip ...

So... Im not sure what other kinds of doctors to ask so I have even asked alternative medicine doctors for natural treatments. Have not heard anything from them yet...

I know ya'll try weird things like poking it with needles and things like that...hmm I would never tell him to try that. Don't you think it would probably get infected and make the situation worse? Plus, if the salivary duct itself is damaged...then draining it with a needle at home won't fix the problem. It'll just drain and then the cyst will come back since the damaged duct is leaking... (unless it is the restricted flow type of mucocele).

Anyway...please please contact me if you have any suggestions. I want to see my friend go back to playing trumpet ASAP!!

Can someone tell me more about

-salt water treatments

-primrose oil

-listerine

-gly-oxide

...I have read about these things on the forum. Im going to ask doctors about them, but I want to hear from the people that have tried them too! Please let me know exactly what you did and the results...

Thanks so much and I hope that everyone's cysts will go away....

I would think that playing the trumpet would burst it anyway. And if he played every day then it wouldn't have time to grow back. He doesn't have to pussy foot around it, treat it roughly and it will be fine.

I have the exact same problem. I used to play trombone for school as a music major and now I haven't played in 9 months because of my mucoceles. I had 3 big mucoceles and a LOT of smaller ones. These are not the ones I usually see on this site. I had ones which were deep and couldn't be pinched by a needle. I had it drained by a doctor but my muciceles just came back. Then I got it removed including the sacs. I was able to play well for about a month but then new ones seemed to grow right beside the previous ones. I too have been to several speacialists and they haven't found a solution for me. Natalie, could you give me your friend's or your email. I would like to know if you have found any solutions.
