Please do not be mislead by many of the well meaning posts on this blog as i was. Mucoceles do NOT go away on their own, and puncturing and draining them causes them in most c cases to grow deeper and deeper into the tissue making the eventual surgical removal much more complicated. I wish I had known this before. My regular dentist told me it may go away so I waited for months and reading on this blog the success story of puncturing it draining and keeping clean with mouthwash etc, thought I would try that first. well it didnt go away.. in the beginning it flattened a little and I thought it might disappear, but instead the tissue became more and more fibrotic, ie harder, in the area where I was poking and actually the mucocele was growing down, deeper and deeper. I have now spoken to several surgeons, in both the UK, France and in Asia as I travel frequently and they all informed me that they do NOT go away on their own and poking them is a terrible idea. Not only does it not solve the problem of the mucocele, it makes that worse, but it also might damage other glands, causing other mucoceles. Anyway after finding out this information and scheduling the first available surgery with a ranking surgeon in Singapore who had done hundreds if not thousands of these operations, he confirmed that I had caused a lot of trauma to the area and sent the mucocele deeper and deeper, so the surgery, though not painful, took longer and was more complex than it had to be, as the mucocele had grown around blood vessels etc. Today, one day post op, my lower lip is golf ball sized but I am very happy to be rid of it, needless to say. So pls do not be deceived by the well meaning posts here. Go and see a surgeon who has done this kind of surgery before and hear it directly from an expert. These do not go away, and you will only harm yourself further with a regular schedule of poking and draining. Oh the other thing is that laser removal is not recommended apparently unless the mucocele is fairly new and very basic in shape.. the reason is the laser may damage the surrounding tissue and cause other mucoceles, and with the scalpel the surgeon can see the area, and clean the bed of the grapelike salivary glands which may have been feeding the mucocele.. Pls dont take it from me but do from a professional surgeon or dentist who is experiened with such matters... dont wait, do it earlier rather than later.. It would have saved me so much aggravation had I known this earlier. Hope this helps.

Thank you. This is what I needed to read....before i was an idiot and drained it 3 times.
Most welcome. Good luck. Its now four days post op and the swelling has gone down so it appears normal from the outside and Im so glad to be rid of that thing. Dont worry, I was popping it three times a day for months so yours hopefully hasnt gone too deep.
Very interesting that you have seen so many doctors in so many places. I got mine surgically removed, and I wouldn't change a thing about that if I had to do it again.
