hi,
Am worried like hell. I have a swelling or a raised area (much like a half pea) on my lower lip. the color is same as with the other areas. I went to my family physician. Told him everything that I used to smoke and occassionaly chewed tobacco. He asked me to stop it and prescribed a multi-vitamin tablet along with a cortico-steroid gel(triamcinolone acetonide oral paste). In the first two days of using this gel, a small head appeared to the lump(previously there was none).Thats all. it doesnt burst. no increase or decrease in size.no color difference except the head appears almost transparent. its been 25 days since i detected it(i detected it when i bit it accidentally) and i hv been on treatment since 12 days now. No use.
Please tell me what do you make out of all these?
How long does a mucocele last? I hv read that they usually become ok in 10-15 days.
Do you think this could be oral cancer? (My doc seemed unperturbed. I asked him whether it could be cancerous. He says continue with the treatment n we will see.No biopsy recommended...)
PLEASE HELP

"except the head appears almost transparent. "

"much like a half pea"

Sounds very much like a mucocele.....they can last for a long time, or like one of mine, go up and down every couple days.

COULD it be oral cancer ?? Of course...but your doc is not an idiot. However, I'd recommend going to your dentist or an oral surgeon...they are much more familiar with these little beasts. ( used a steroidal paste on one of mine years ago....didn't do much of anything)

Bottom line...I wouldn't freak out about it, but I would see a dentist/oral surgeon

Thanks big johnny,

based on your advice, i showed this to a dentist( a very experienced old guy btw, must have been practising since i was a kid(at least 20 yrs)). He had a look at it, looked all around my mouth and said it was a mucocele and no surgery is required. his exact words were - "sometimes when we accidentally bite the lower lip or while eating non-veg food, some internal minor cuts or punctures may appear and then it gets filled with saliva...we need to encourage this to burst out on its own. then some saliva like liquid will flow out...." I asked him - "so is this a mucocele? and do I need to get a biopsy done?" he said nothiing of that sort is required and yes its a mucocele.

he seemed pretty confident that it was a mucocele and it will burst out... 12 days now... nothing has changed... the lump or cyst in still the same with a small head . no infection ....still can feel the cyst when i catch the area in two fingers and move it around. it has not intention of bursting out. what should i do? not that its causing me trouble. but do you think this guy is right? or do i need to show it again to some other dentist.

most of the other guys says that it enlarges then diminishes in size and so on thru out the day.... mine is a very well settled one... like its here to stay...
Am still freaked out on this. please advise....

Based on my personal experience, and everything I read, mucoceles don't often go away on their own. They may come and go...they may stay constant...and (occasionally)they may just "burn out" and go away without return.

For me...things in my mouth tend to freak me out (dipped snuff way too long), and I opt for the "cut this thing out now" option. (Just had something taken off my hard palate last week ). It all comes down to how you feel with that beast sitting there for what could be all eternity.

My recommendation is to see an oral surgeon...directly if you can or with a dentist referral. It's obvious this thing is worrying the hell out of you, and I can relate. Oral surgeons are much more experienced with these things, and in my mind it's worth the expense for the piece of mind....
