Seeing Doctor tomorrow - hoping he will say I need mucocele removing
Hi,
Thought I'd join this forum as I've had my 2nd mucocele for over 2 months now. The first one went away after a while, but it's now come back with a vengeance. Classic scenario - inner lip, blueish tint...it's now a good 1cm and is driving me mental!
I did see the doctor about the first one and he recommended rubbing it daily to break it down. Haven't seen this one recommended anywhere else - is this a tip anyone else has heard? When it went I assumed it worked, but this time it has made no difference whatsoever.
So on this trip to the doctor I'm going to ask him to refer me for surgery. Can't put up with it any longer!! I've cleared it with my insurance company and they'll fund all of it (I'm in the UK btw). If he doesn't refer me, I may have to resort to popping it myself....I'm constantly aware of it and I'm finding drinking hot drinks getting more uncomfortable.
I'll let you know how I get on.
If this doctor doesn't refer you...get a second opinion and the referral !!!
Rubbing it daily and breaking it down....nope. My oral surgeon specifically said not to pick at them.
hi im assumin i have the same but who do i go 2 first the dentist or the doctors x thanx tracey
I would go to the dentist first. Who better to evaluate an oral issue than a dentist...and then possibly a referral to an oral surgeon.
General MDs may or may not know about these little bastards...
mine doesnt look lk a blister tho and it moves around does it still sound the same x
not really...mucoceles are very distinctly blister looking.
Moving around is a good sign though....seroius stuff usually is pretty fixed.
That being said...start with a good dentist...
Hi - UPDATE!
I got referred to an oral surgeon and this morning and I've had my mucocele removed! What a relief. I reckon it was 1cm x 1.5cm before surgery.
The worst thing was the nurse holding my mouth open and pushing down with all her might. As I'm writing this the anaesthetic is starting to wear off and it's now starting to hurt. It's not unbearable though.
I asked to see the little blighter after the surgeon had finished - it was just a little round red ball of flesh.
Good luck to all those who choose to have surgery! If you can afford it or have the cover, go for it.
Interested in hearing how your follow-up and recovery go...good luck
Thanks Bigjohnny - I'll post a few updates as time progresses.
Just thought I'd mention one of the warnings the surgeon gave me, as I've not heard of this one before....
**** NOTE: The surgeon said this was extremely rare, so I don't want this scaring anyone ****
I was warned that when removing the mucocele there have been very, very rare occasions where, if the nerve gets damaged you can get temporary and very, very, very rarely permanent numbness in the chin area below where the mucocele was.
As this is a forum for sharing info, I've mentioned it here just so people can be aware.
I have some ever so slight numbness in my lower lip from one taken off several years ago, and it has improved with time...don't even notice it now, and was not at all disfiguring...
Well, just over 1 week since the op and it's healed very well. I ended up cutting off some loose ends of the stitches that appeared as they gradually dissolved; but that was no problem. I did find eating my main meals became a little painful after the first few mouthfuls - but it did force me to cut my food into smaller portions, which is a good habit I should try to keep.
So, at the moment the skin is slightly raised and hard where the stitches were and I too had some very, very slight numbness - that's improving daily. Overall, it's brilliant that the stupid great lump in my mouth has gone!
