Are there any permanent recoveries?
Hey, I'm concerned about the procedure....apparently there is high possibility these come back even after surgical removal? Unless you remove the saliva gland? Does that then contribute to dry mouth? And cause a sort of "caved in area"?
I would like to hear back from anyone who has had this procedure over 2 years ago, and see how the history of healing took place....who did the procedure......if any mucoceles returned.....and if the saliva gland was removed also.
Yes, surgery does involve removing the offending salivary gland, and in my case, many of the surrounding salivary glands. I had this surgery over 4 years ago, and I haven't had any complications. No dry mouth, no "caved in area."
It isn't unheard of, though, for mucoceles to return. Sometimes more salivary glands will get irritated and blocked during surgery (this is why they remove the surrounding glands). Or, if a person has a habit of biting their lip or getting punched in the face, that can cause them to return. I think it's safe to say that for most people, they don't return.
This is just an observation . . .
Most people that come across this forum will find useful information, have their mucocele removed, and will not have any reason to come back and report several years later. I think this is the reason there seems to be a disproportionate number of people on this forum that have experienced reoccurrence.
I have an appointment soon to have mine removed. If I *remember* to return to this site 2+ years later, I'll be sure to write a report--but it's likely that I will just go on with my life and forget about the whole thing.
Hi, I had mucocele removal surgery in June of 2007, about 1 1/2 years ago. They did remove my salivary gland also. I have not had a recurrence to date. I do, however, still have numbness on that side of my lower lip (outside and inside my mouth), and inside my mouth, there is a scar, I can feel it with my tongue. Hope this helps.
