Can someone put my mind at ease? I noticed a small purplish bump on the left (inner) side of my lower lip. I used to smoke (15 years) chewed tobacco off and on for a few years, and have been chewing nicoteen gum for 6 years. I saw my dentist today, and he told me that he did not know what it was. He referred me to an oral surgon, who I have an appointment with next week. I have attached a pic. Please comment.....

Thanks

It does look like a mucocele, but I think it's great that you're going to see an oral surgeon...they have the most experience with these.  He'll probably want to take it off and biopsy, just to be safe.

Yeah it does look like a mucocele but it isn't very serious at this stage. If you keep biting it and traumatizing it, it will over time get bigger and larger as you go. I have one and it's funny because it's like it's alive. ;) I have to use mouthwash to keep my teeth from decaying from the contraption in my mouth, and it gets red from how hot/spicy the mouthwash is. Today it's so SMALL but tomorrow it's HUGE!!!! It's actually funny, but SO annoying.

Thanks. The oral surgeon told me "congrats you bit your lip". I have to go back in a few weeks, so he can check it out. He did say it might be a mucocele. Thanks again....

um you're welcome. Next Tuesday I have to go to the oral surgeon to get a biopsy. I'm being put on General Anesthesia but it costs soooo much... over 300 dollars. You're lucky it's that small. Usually it's about 7 or 8 mm.
