Recurrance

My first mucocele appeared in March 2009. I thought it was a canker sore so I didn't do anything until a month or so later when I had it removed. It healed quickly but it reappeared at the end of May. Then I had it removed again and my ENT took out a MUCH deeper and wider cut. Two weeks later, my tongue is still slightly numb (though some feeling has returned), the mucocele is ALREADY back.

What should I do? I'm trying evening primrose oil but I know it doesn't usually work for most people. Is it too early to get it removed when my tongue nerves aren't completely patched yet? My ENT said that we could wait a month but I rather just get it over with BUT I don't want it to come back a FOURTH time. I am really at a loss. Please, any advice would help.

Hey where is the mucocele located on your tongue? I have had one under my tongue since January 2009. I finally got it removed in March and it came back a month later. I went to get it removed the second time in May and the oral surgeon went much deeper. Three weeks later the mucocele returned. I am going to get it removed for the third time and I am not looking forward to it! Does yours hurt a lot? My mucocele is so annoying it flares up and becomes so painful. Some days it stays small and doesn't bother me. My tongue still feels numb from my first procedure. I would try to wait it out and see what happens, but if it hurts then I would get it out. Hopefully it won't come back! Btw, did you ever get your tongue pierced?

yeah throughout the whole tongue it's commonly located under the tongue usually on the floor. and are u sure it isn't coming back as a new one? Because people mistake them as the same one. My mucocele hurt some days and others it was like it wasn't even there. No, I didn't get my tongue pierced, and if you did, that's probably why you have a mucocele. Also, for future reference if you haven't pierced it,  piercing your lip can cause mucoceles.

I am not sure if it is a new one. All I know is that after it heals the mucocele comes back in the same place. Right now my mucocele is so small it does not even bother me. Other times it gets so large and painful. I am going for my fourth surgery next week. Hopefully this will be the end of this!

It is probably new ones.  Mucoceles on the floor of the mouth are called rannulas.  Any oral surgery has the risk of damaging surrounding salivary gland ducts, bringing on a new mucocele.

It is not on the floor of the mouth. The mucocele is located on the midline on the ventral side of my tongue. I just went for my fourth surgery last week and I already feel the sensation of the mucocele. When I feel this sensation the mucocele appears and comes right through my stitches! This thing is nasty and it is taking forever to go away. I am moving on to an ENT most likely.

I think you should look for a specialist. Someone who has dealt with this before so they can remove it for good! Good luck!

In Australia we have specialists called Oral Pathologists. Some here treat mucoceles by freezing them with Cryotherapy (nitrous oxide). I've heard that recurrence tends to be less and sites heal with less scarring than other surgical methods.

I hope this helps.
