I had a big lump in my mouth last year that I concluded was a mucocele. I tried salt, Carmex, etc. and nothing worked. I even went to an oral surgeon who immediately said I had to have surgery. Of course....he wanted his money. I've never had surgery so I was hesitant to go through with the surgery, especially since the doctor said that mucoceles can return even after surgery. Then I stumbled upon this miraculous site and read someone's post about using Listerine and IT WORKED!!!!! it was like a miracle. Not sure if this will work for everyone, but it worked for me. I used the gold colored "Listerine Antiseptic Mouthwash" and within days my mucocele vanished. Even though the bottle says to rinse your mouth for 30 seconds, I rinsed my mouth for 2 minutes several times a day (more than twice a day), and I made sure to brush my teeth in the morning and at night. It was a miracle. I was so grateful that I didn't have to have surgery. I recommend everyone try this before even contemplating surgery. Good luck to all!!!

Dentists/Oral surgeons/health professionals do not reccomend to their patients treatments that have not been proven to be safe, beucase if there are nasty side-effects (short or long-term), they have to be responsible for that. In this respect it is not to do with money, but to do with treating your mucocele in a way that there is the smallest chance that it might come back. Even though it has gone for now, there's still the same chance as before that it will return. You probably already know that leaving a mucocele in your mouth is fine as long as it is not bothering you (pain etc) and that they can go away by themselves at any random point in time.

I'm glad your mucocele is not bothering you now, but I personally would not be using Listerine which is over a quarter alcohol in content (Original = 26.9%). I further would not be using it longer than the reccomended dose (ie. 4 times longer), multiple times per day. You may rid yourself of the mucocele, but you may be leaving yourself open for other oral problems. Just be careful smile

ive had one for about two months and it began like they all do, big , kind of blue, and with just a little bit of skin/lip over it. Then I popped it and it looked as it went away only to come back as before. I continued popping it, and it continues to fill up unitl recently. It now does not look like it did a couple months ago, meaning I still have a bump, it is just not like before when it was clear that I had one. It looks as though i have a bump, and when i squeez it I can feel it. It is a lot harder thab before. I am guessing it is because scar tissue was encapsulated the slimey saliva. I say this because when I try to pop it now it seems as though I am sticking the needle through something much harder, but the liquid still comes out. However, even with the liquid out I still have a noticeable bump, probably from squeezing so hard so that the liquid comes out. Also, could it be that because I have had the bump for so long my lip has naturally formed a bump of healthy skin around the mucocele? I am going to goo to a dentist soon, but I was wondering if anyone has had it removed this late in its stage like mine.

I read this post after having a mucocele in my mouth for three months. At that point I was willing to try anything to get this annoying (and ugly) thing off my bottom lip. I brushed my teeth at least twice a day and washed my mouth out (making sure to expose the mucocele to the mouthwash for elongated periods of time) with mouthwash. I followed the directions and did not swish for more that a minute, but in the end, it worked.

For those of your reading this who may feel that the lump will never disappear (and it may, in my case, reappear--i don't know) I would like to reassure you that it will eventually go away. And if not, there's always oral surgery--but that gets tricky with insurance. You need to prove that it is medically necessary in order for the insurance company to pay for it, and even then (on my pretty amazing plan) they cover only 80% per year oral surgery.

It is so nice to have it gone--I'd suggest keeping your mouth as clean as you can. This means: brush, floss and mouthwash three times a day like they tell you as a kid.  It can't hurt.

I'm sorry, but if Listerine clears up the problem then it was never a mucocele to begin with.  You were misdiagnosed.  Perhaps your oral surgeon just wanted to make some money.
