How long should it take for the original mucocele to burst? Also do you need to use listerene before it busts or cna you just rinse with water? I have been applying alum for a few days now and really want to make sure I am not wasting and efforts. Thanks

I've been applying alum for 4 days now 3 times a day using a cue tip, covering the entire mucocele with the paste-like substance and rinsing with listerine after 15 min. Some layers of skin have peeled/washed away, but it has yet to burst on its own. It seems to be growing though, which according to the original poster is what happens when treated with alum at this stage. I don't want to use a pin and burst it on my own, but it seems like the healing process can't really begin until it has burst. Anyone else have a similar experience? Perhaps mine is especially impacted. This thing is driving me crazy. :(

In response to person asking if I continued with the alum after I saw the white dot next to my mucocele. I have. It's been 3 days. The crater has basically healed up on it's own, no pain or stinging, but there still feels like a small bump where I've been treating the mucocele. Mine does not appear to be growing. Shrinking if anything. I'm going to try 2 more days for a total of 5. Then let it heal, and see how things are at that point.

Thank you, I'm continuing the alum as well. Mine seems to be shrinking too. I don't have dental insurance so I'm hoping this works. Will continue with updates, hope you do too.

I'm going to start the alum treatment today! I have scheduled my surgery in 11 days. But, my mucocele is HUGE!!!! the size of a cooked pinto bean (lol thats the first thing that popped in my head)I've seen photos online and I def have a big deep one! Anyone have success w/ a big one using the alum?? Thanks guys, u r all so helpful!

Well it's about day 5 now. After initially shrinking the mucocele, developing a canker sore-like (crater) which healed, and a new white dot developing next to my original mucocele......The white dot developed into a new mucocele, and the old one still feels like it's there. So now I have two, very small mucoceles next to one another. After tonight, I'm saying screw the alum, and making an evaluation appointment asap with my dentist I guess.....Who do you go to initially to have look at your mucoceles?

MIKEY MIKE, Im going thru this mucocele problem also and im planning to go on and do my own pinning and/or needling of my mucocele...will be my first time i hope it goes well. As i have researched all over the net this site is the most informative one.....a mucocele is just excess red blood cells, saliva, enzymes and what not and the reason why it swells up is because it becomes a sack of that excess sooo im hoping draining it and using hydrogen peroxide on the wound every 4 hours will thorougly relieve this bogus situation..wish me luck fellow mucocelians....lol

in response to the question who do you go to for the removal or evaluation of a mucocele....its an ENT doctor, if you have insurance then they usually take care of this for you, and then theres the an oral surgeon who doesnt always take insurance...so your best bet is an ENT. But if you plan to go thru this surgery which I HAVE TWICE make sure you follow directions and understand the a reoccurence is possible! im on my third one, first i got it excised second it came back and i got marsupialed third time i got burnt off and they used a 5 steroid injections.....guess what.. its back again and i plan to handle this on my own and see it thru...ill be reporting to this website as the days go on. my name is mikey mike btw

well i just went ahead and poked several holes into my mucocele with a sanitized in alcohol safety pin...o and also my mucocele is located under the tip of my tongue.....bleeding occured, i did notice any puss or anything coming out soo thats cool i guess. before i did my draining i noticed a hole already there but i figured it would be best to poke several more in like a circle and in the very middle. the mucocele skin looks pretty shredded and raw...i let my tongue sit in hydrogen peroxide because the agent helps kill mucocele as said on the bottle. i did that about 3 times 5 mins each. now i will wait 2 hours and see how its going if needed will poke more holes. i will keep you updated on the procedure. please reply back with questions and or comments :D Mikey Mike

I would like to also go ahead you mucocelians it is definitely not a good thing to be smoking while you have this mucocele because i drank and smoked after my surgery after it healed over and it may it have been just from a general reoccurence or what but for sure drinking and smoking irritates the healing and/or mucocele itself...so take the oppurtunity to heal right, save your healt and your money by not smoking and drink until it is completely gone. And remember im not a doctor so take my replys as suggestion in what you may be able to do as a mucocelian. :D i will keep you updated folks

After using the alum for a solid 7 days, nothing really happened other than the mucocele growing in size & irritation. Upon stopping, it has decreased in size. Maybe continuing the treatment would have accelerated bursting process leading to healing, but I opted to contact an ENT within my insurance plan and have it removed professionally. From the research I've been doing, it appears a CO2 laser removal has the lowest chance recurrence. I'll report back after it is removed!

All I can say is that for me, personally, this are the steps I went through:

1) Clean mucocele with alcohol on q-tip. Poke mucocele with disinfected needle in about 5 places around the mucocele. Squeeze it a bit but not too much, because not much is going to come out other than blood. Use alcohol q-tip again. Slight stinging.

2) Apply alum for 15 minutes. Dip moist fingertip in alum and dab all over mucocele. Hold out lip with finger so you don't swallow any of the alum. It tastes awful. Rinse off with water. The skin of the mucocele is likely to turn white and feel deadened.

3) Rinse with listerine or dab with alcohol q-tip. If you rinse with listerine, the white skin will probably turn blue. I just rinsed with water after that.

4) Repeat steps 1-3 every 2 hours. Make sure that none of the skin is healing over and that there are always holes in the mucocele. Don't poke too deep though. There may be a tiny drop of blood here and there but there shouldn't be much at all. And you should not feel much pain, either. Otherwise you might be doing something wrong.

It sounds silly, but this takes dedication and it has to become part of your daily schedule in order for it to work. I kept all my "supplies" in a paper bag and went to the bathroom at work. The mucocele started to visibly heal in a white crater formation, in about 5 days, and took about a month for the redness to completely vanish. Just poking it, or just using alum did not work for me. I had to do both, on a regular schedule. Just make sure that you USE ALCOHOL every time you touch the mucocele! I don't want anyone getting an infection and blaming me. Of course what worked for me may not work for others.

The alum sounds like a pretty good idea followed by the listerine.  I think the listerine is great because my oral surgeon was concerned about infection happening after the mucocele bursts.  The listerine probably helps prevent infection.  I tried listerine at first but it didn't work for me.  It kinda burnt the crap out of the roof of my mouth.  I was probably swishing too long. Lol!

I was thrilled to find this site.  It confirmed what this thing in my mouth is.  After reading various posts I decided that surgery would definitely be a last resort for me.  I've had the mucocele for about 5 weeks.  It burst last week so I thought it would go away only to find it bubbled up the next day.  I didn't have alum in the spice drawer but I did have baking powder which contains the same ingredient--sodium aluminum sulfate.  So I made a paste with a drop of water and dabbed in on.  I pulled my lip out so that it would not dissolve.  I kept it on for 5-10 mins.  I did not have Listerine either but I had Crest Pro Health Night rinse so I used that.  I did this 3x yesterday and after the 2nd time the mucocele had burst.  I also dabbed a bit of hydrogen peroxide on it 1x with a Q-tip.  It seems smaller and it has not bubbled up again so I have done the procedure again 2x so far today.  I plan on continuing with this in hopes that it eventually goes away FOREVER!  I will update with my progress.  Thanks for posting this home treatment--how did you think to put alum on it in the first place?

As I had previously posted, originally I had one mucocele which I treated, only to have a new one form next to it. Well, it's been about 7 days since I treated the first one, which has shrunk to just a flat, white spot, which is no longer raised. The new mucocele grew quite large and I popped it yesterday beginning to treat it like I treated the first one (alum 3-4x's, rinse with listerine). If it isn't gone in another 5 days, I'm scheduling surgery, but I figure in the meantime it doesn't hurt to try the alum method. Trying to cut back my smoking.

I think alum was tried originally because alum is effective w/canker sores so somebody probably thought what the hell i'll give it a shot, & it worked!

Update - Day 2 - my mucocele is still flat and white and has not bubbled up so I'm psyched and confident it will go away...so long as I can avoid biting it while eating!  Continuing with the 3x/day baking powder/rinse.

Day 3 of my poking and hydrogen peroxide method. It works! went from 1cm red bubble to a white flat spot that i continue to poke every 4 hours or when i feel like it needs it. Remember to keep tools sterile and swish with some sort of agent that kills bacteria..such as hydrogen peroxide. as ive read the earlier posts it is very very true that this isnt a quick type of deal going on. you have to be very patient and organized..screw ups are not a must and the time factor will be long but as soon as you see it go down youll feel the freedom of living again...i know i had trouble with this thing..it came back 3 times and stopped me from exercising because i noticed after a workout it would swell and also when i ate anything pretty it would swell..not the greatest feeling. but now that i understand how this works, found this website...all is better not good but will be in due time, ill check back with you all asap.
