day 4.... the mucocele is slowly going away but the bump is still noticeable and quite smaller then it was about 75% smaller...i plan to keep up with the poking sessions and swishing hyrodgen peroxide and if the bump itself is still visible in 3 days i am going to grab some alum to decrease the bump to crater form...i was planning on do this anyway since it makes sense.... I have a mucocele that I tried to pop. I didn't really pop like I expected, it just broke the top layer of the mucocele. Nothing much really drained from it. Within 24 hrs of popping it, this white tissue just grew out of the mucocele, like a white mass or ball of tissue is just attached to the top of the mucocele. I don't have money or health insurance, so this really sucks. I was just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience with white tissue growing out of their mucocele after draining it.

Wow LeafyGreens!

That was some story!  An exacto blade though? Really?  I would have been scared as heck to try that.  One question.  I've heard of a lot of people lancing their mucoceles themselves.  Does it ever hurt?  I know it had to burn like heck putting alcohol on it. I'm glad you won the battle with your mucocele though!

Well the pain was a relative factor, considering the mucocele itself made me want to jump off a bridge. I kept biting it, and it would swell up, turn blue, and stick out of my mouth when I tried to talk to people. Humiliating! I was ready to try anything (except surgery, because of all the horror stories.) It did sting, but not too bad. I guess the exact-o helped a little bit more than a needle, because it's somewhat flat, so I could peel back a layer of skin rather than just poking a hole in it that would seal up faster. No method is fun or easy.

One Week Later - mucocele is pretty much gone.  Very small white dot where it was.  I've forgotten to treat it the past 3-4 days.

Hate to say it, but home remedies are not a long-term solution. I tried the alum treatment 3x a day for 7 days with no real progress other than continued swelling, so I made an appointment with an ENT and had my mucocele removed surgically. Draining and cutting at the mucocele at home, or applying alum to dissolve the skin away is not a solution, just a temporary fix. The ENT not only cuts open and drains the mucocele, but removes the mass of tissue AND the salivary duct(s) that is blocked/damaged, and responsible for creating the cyst. No amount of alum could possibly come close to removing what was taken out of my lip. The thing was decently large, a mass of tissue about the size of a dime. The doc used a surgical tool (after numbing injections and a snip with scissors) that cauterized as it cut. Zero pain after the initial shots- the whole procedure took about 20 minutes. The only unnerrving part was smelling my own flesh being burned away, but it really wasn't a big deal. I got a chance to see the mucocele after it was removed, and was surprised at the size of the damn thing. I could also see the damaged duct attached to it, and one stitch later, I was done. I was given a Rx for numbing jelly to apply every hour, and the soreness pretty much subsided by the next morning. Two days later, the wound is nearly sealed shut, healing quickly, and is pain-free. I was able to eat solid food that same night, just had to use a fork and ate slowly. I know it has been said before, but if you are able, schedule an appointment with an ENT or Oral Surgeon and get the mucocele removed for good. If removed correctly, the chances or recurrence are very slim, MUCH less than just popping or draining it yourself.

-E- Hey guys, I just started treating my mucocele with alum and Listerine. I punctured the mucocele with a sterilized pin 3-4 times then drained some of the fluids out. I then applied the alum. I let it sit for 15 minutes then washed it with water and then Listerine. The mococele seems to be a bit bigger than it was before and a bit harder. Does this sound like how your process started? Also what exactly is the alum doing? I'm a little confused as to how it all works. Thanks for any help.

Hello Guest:

I think home treatment will work for mucoceles however, I do think that the size of the mucocele matters.  If it is a mucocele that has been constantly popped by force, I think home treatments may not work as well.  The more you pop them by force, the deeper the scar tissue becomes, which makes it harder to get rid of, unless you get it removed with surgery.

Hello Guest -E-:

I think bursting the mucocele most definately makes a mucocele harder, at least, it will make the scar tissure deeper.  The alum is supposed to have a drawing affect, making the mucocele draw up and go away.

I give up. I've tried alum and listerine regularly and I've had my mucocele for 5 weeks now. It got bigger and smaller over time, but I'm done. Scheduled appt with ENT next week. This thing has got to go!

I just got one in my mouth for the first time ever as of 5 days ago because I bit my lip accidently. I researched on the internet and figured out it was a mucocele. I'm wondering if I should wait to see if it goes away on it's own since it hasn't even been a week yet or if I should start this treatment now.

I have been trying this treatment for a few days now - poking with a sterilized needle, cleaning with alcohol/Listerine and covering with a baking soda paste two or three times a day. Just wondering, how many days should I continue poking with the needle? At some point, should I stop poking and let it heal? Thanks for your help. How do I know when to stop poking?

Until you have the damaged salivary duct and resulting cyst removed, the Mucocele will continue to refill. The sac that fills with saliva & mucus isn't the real problem, its the scar tissue buildup and damaged duct that is the culprit. If you have insurance, schedule an appointment with an ENT, or an Oral Surgeon for proper removal. Beats poking yourself with a needle everyday and messing around with home remedies that don't really address the problem. There is always a risk for recurrence, but that risk is exponentially smaller when properly removed.

I have had one surgically removed and one go away with alum and listerine home treatment.  Just goes to show, different things work for different folks.  I wish I would have known about the home treatment before the one I had surgically removed.  Surgery was no walk in the park and I have permanent numbness on a small portion of my lip as a result.  I simply like alternatives that may work and fortunately the home treatment worked for me.

It's not really an issue of poking it, because nothing is going to come out. The issue is to keep the top of the mucocele open so that it can drain, and the alum will keep the skin dry so that it doesn't close over as quickly. I would just keep the top open by continually peeling back the skin, rather than poking it very deep.

Right. I guess the more accurate question is how long should I keep the top of the mucocele open (and apply alum) so that it can drain? How many days should I make sure it remains "open" before letting it close and heal up? Is there a way to know if it has drained? Thanks for your help.

I think I did it every 2 hours for at least a week. In between putting on the alum I checked in the mirror to make sure that the hole was open. If it looked like it was closing up again, I'd take the exact-o blade and make sure the skin was peeled back. You will be able to tell when it is healing, because you won't feel that tight, sensitive feeling anymore. It will heal as a crater formation and the redness will take a few weeks to go away. At least, it did for me.
