Home treatment for mucoceles that works every time
guest poster
The Alum never worked for me. I tried for 3 weeks straight and nothing. It would only get smaller if I poked small hole on it but eventualy would fill up again even if I applied Alum every 2 hours. I tried everything even when I squeesed out all the saliva and a little blood, and it felt almost gone, the side of the bump stayed the same. Almost like it was filled with Air.
I had the surgery done last Wednesday, I talked to the Dr about the Alum and he said that way work but in very few cases where the salivary gland wasn't actually fully damaged. He showed me mine when he pull it out, there is nothing Alum could have done to that thing unless it melted it away (which Alum can't do) Anyways it's been 7 days all my stiches have gone away and my mouth is 95% back to normal. Probably 2 more days an it'll be back to normal.
I'm still in the process. 5 days behind. But I do watch quite progress. I'll try to make the current photo. The fundamental change occurred after perforation of the skin on top. I think it loose 30% of mass.

I have just started treating my mucocele with alum and listerine. I am wondering if most people, that were successful using this method, popped the blister with a needle or did it work just using the alum and rinse. I don't want to pop it if it is better not to. Any replies would be much appreciated! ~Quick

I think I currently have a mucocele and I'm going to try big foot's remedy. I will let everybody know how it turns out.
i tried the alum, didnt work for me, Im on the primrose oil. on day 3 and the results are great! i suggest that method, but you know everyone is different. I have had my mucocele for 18 months! so i just feel if it can work on me it can work on anyone.
it was pretty embedded, now its almost gone!! dont want to get to excited but it is a nice relief even if it just for a moment.

ok this might have been a really bad idea, but i have had this white bump on my lip forever, and it constantly gets big, pops and then is almost unnoticeable. well today it was really big and i got fed up and literally bit it off, there was a lot of blood, and now i how i shouldn't have done that, but i am going to try to use the alum and listerine, hopefully it will work for me.

I have never been on a message board, but this forum has been so helpful to me that I felt it was important to share my experience with my mucocele. I have had my mucocele for about 3 weeks now. I watched the online videos of surgery and nearly died to think of that happening to the inside of my lip so I decided to try at home treatment. My mucocele is very large – similar in size to the poster “KIR” from Russia before he treated his. After reading these forums I decided to try the alum/listerine route. I used it for 3 days, 10 minutes each time. Alum helped in a couple of ways – it made the mucocele more “ripe” and brought a tiny tiny white dot to the surface. During that treatment I’ll share what I learned NOT to do: I tried the wet cotton ball up against my lip with alum paste, but it burned the crease at the bottom of my mouth. It produced mini “cold sores” for a few hours. At first I was alarmed, because I read on an earlier post that someone got the cold sores and wound up having to go into surgery. But, I just waited it out and they went down at the end of the day. Basically, think of it as your skin getting extremely fried/dried out, that’s all that happened. So, if you see cold sores from the alum burning, don’t be alarmed, no harm at all. If I could also give advice of what TO do: take a piece of cotton ball and line the bottom crease of your lip/gum area before you apply the alum – that blocks the alum from settling down there and that way that delicate skin doesn’t run the risk of getting irritated and dried out. Create the alum paste and put it on the mucocele – just on the mucocele - and hold your lip out as it sits on there. It’s annoying to hold your lip out, but you will save yourself the pain of alum drying out the skin around your mucocele. Now, my mucolcele did NOT get smaller in size with just Alum (hopefully this will answer the post where someone asked “does it get smaller with just alum and no poking?”) For me, no. My mucocele was big and Alum was not enough to make it smaller. I had planned to puncture it myself with a sterilized needle today (day 4) to see what would happen. When I happened to go to my dermatologist today, she knew exactly what it was and she just took a needle and poked it (just as I planned to do). A gel-like saliva string came out at first and then some blood started coming out after the saliva was out. It was almost as similar as when you pop a pimple. She just kept pushing all the fluid and blood out with her fingers until it was empty (took about 5 minutes to do). It’s been 6 hours and my mucocele is completely flat. So, in summary, alum ripens it, gives it a tiny white head, but by poking it with a needle it was gone immediately. I hope this helps.

I've been using a Alum for a few days, its been getting a little more tender. After reading that last post I poked it and now I have Scope in my mouth to kill the germs since it's open. I remember I poked it last year when I didn't know what it was (smart, I know), and it had gone away so hopefully this time it's gone again. This thread has been a lot of help. If it doesn't go away I'm going to the doctor and getting this bitch fried away, I don't care what it costs: I can't put a price on my confidence.

Still have mucocele.I've used alum for 10 days now, 3x a day, 15 min folowed by 3min of listerine. Goin on 6 weeks since first appereance on lower lip, gets marble sized every 5 days, then i poke with pin and drain for relief(mental not physical pain). Seems like this alum thing only works for a minority.I will say that the alum has allowed me to make it 10 days without getting so annoyed it had to drain it. Makes it more plyable, less dense and pressure filled. Just burst tonight when i ate. I will continue to treatment, but if it returns this time i might try to go crazy and put it on every 2hrs and not let the tiny wound open-pin poking or let proding(heard someone else try this in desperation with good results) If this doesn't work then i am over the alum treatment.

I have mucocele goin on month and a half and used alum per bigfoot's directions for 10 days.It is still there.Has anybody had a medium to large sized mucocele for weeks or months, the kind that are always regenerating and accumulating saliva,(not these 24hr come and go deals i've read about)disappear from the alum?If so, how many days and how many times per day did you apply the alum?Wondering if keeping the wound open, by pin popping or removing white tissue, is important?

I had my mucocele for 2 months, I think. I'd have to go back and read my initial post. It was a fairly big size, big enough that it was starting to interfere with my speech! When I treated mine, I used a needle the first day or two - after that it was just too sore to keep popping so I used only alum. It eventually went away after I think 5-7 days, and towards the end I was really getting aggressive and doing it every 1.5 hours and leaving it on for half an hour. It finally went away. When it started to come back, I immediately popped it and put alum on before it got very big and it went away and stayed away. --SOLO

Hey!
Great news- after doing the seasalt+water treatment i saw it shrink a little, then after 2 days it grew. So, seeing it grew i thought the bad stuff was already surfacing. I WAS RIGHT!
the next day, i burnt a needle and then put alcohol on the needle and the mucocele and popped it, after the 4th attempt(i didn't really feel anything) some yellow/clear goo type substance came out. Jeez, was i happy. I immediately put some bicarbonate+alcohol. I don't feel the bump, anymore; just feels shriveled/wrinkled, from all the poking i'm guessing.
I've had this damn thing for a month, so glad it has finally left.

**prelim**
Hi everyone! This thread has been extremely helpful to me so i'm going to share my experience as well (sorry, no pics since all of this is gross enough without them). I bit my lip pretty good about a month and a half ago and thought i'd gotten a canker sore. Since i've never had a canker sore or mucocele before i didn't really know the difference. After about 3 weeks i was starting to grow worried that it hadn't gone away yet, and of course all these horrible thoughts of cancer and whatnot started running through my mind. I'd previously bitten the "canker sore" as a remedy on 2 separate occasions which solved the issue temporarily but it always came back, never very large though, more of an annoyance than anything. So I figured before going to the doctor maybe I should just leave it alone and see what happens. I applied hydrogen peroxide periodically each day and tried putting salt directly on it as well. This was working fine for a week or so but the other day my "canker sore" grew enormous to the point where i'm sure it was noticeable to others. So I came home and was researching whether or not to pop it when I came across this thread. After looking at pictures I realized that I definitely have a mucocele. I was relieved to learn that I'm not dying or anything, but I definitely want this thing to go away. So i'm going to try the alum/listerine approach and I'll let you all know how it goes. I technically started last night, but I want to wait until it's been a full day before I post my progress. Best of luck everyone!!

**day 1**
Alright, so it's the end of day 1 and i've tried the alum/listerine combo about 5 times now. The first time I didn't use a needle simply because I wanted a test run with just the alum. Not much happened, but then again it was only my first application. Since then I've been diligently popping a few holes in my mucocele with a sterilized needle (i've been poking horizontally so that I won't accidentally poke into my lip or anything). I haven't really been squeezing the mucocele once i poke it because in my mind it seems healthier to just let whatever wants to come out naturally come out rather than forcing stuff out (I'm already causing enough trauma to the area, why push it). Then i just put on some alum, wait 20 mins, and swish with listerine for a few more mins. By the third attempt I was definitely seeing some progress, at least in terms of it changing to a white color. Now after round 5 the top of my mucocele is entirely white and it feels more solid and a little bit rough to the touch. In terms of size, I think it's still roughly the same, but maybe a little bit flatter if that makes sense. I'll keep you guys posted on how day 2 goes :)

**day 2** So after day 2 I couldn't be happier with the results! I would say my mucocele is a good 80% smaller than when I started the treatment and i'm finally not embarrassed to talk anymore! I woke up this morning and thought my mucocele was looking a bit smaller, but not by a whole lot. Then I decided to swish with listerine for a while and for the first time it actually burned. When I spit it out a huge chunk of mucocele was missing. I waited a bit, rinsed some more, and saw more progress. I've applied alum about 3 times today, but have really been going to town with the listerine. I also gave up on the needle since once the first chunk came off it didn't really seem like there was much left to pop. I'm so excited by the results and can't thank bigfoot enough for posting this treatment! I'll keep you guys informed, but so far so good!
