Another thread about mucocele recurrence, with a new question:
I had a mucocele removed last April. Now it's November, and it looks like I have another one.
I knew mucoceles recurred, but I was under the impression that after a few months or so, I'd be in the clear. After 6 or 7 months, I feel like this is just another 'cele, though in the same spot as before...
Do mucoceles ever recur several months after removal, or is this likely a separate incident, possibly related to something I do?
I guess I bite my lip, though after the first one, I've been much more careful about that. The same goes for oral hydration--I think the first mucocele was related to a medication I started taking a year or so ago that has the side-effect of dry mouth. I've been very careful to stay hydrated since then, actually quitting regular coffee consumption, among other things (hey--dry mouth can mess up your teeth, mucocele or not!). I'm pretty sure I do not grind my teeth while I sleep, as well.
Any advice on not actually getting mucoceles? I know oral trauma is a likely cause--I say I've avoided biting my lip, but since both incidents started during cold weather, I wonder if it has something to do with trying to hydrate chapped or dry lips. As far as I know, neither incident occurred because of a particularly noticeable oral trauma.
I'll probably get surgery to remove this one, too, if it persists for a month. I'm a bit reluctant to have part of my lip cut out over and over again, though...
(On a side note, if it's remotely helpful to individuals considering mucocele removal surgery for the first time, I had plain ol' knife surgery. It cost $200, plus the office visit co-pay for the diagnosis. I had insurance, but the operation was under the deductible, so my doctor's visit was covered and not the actual removal. I went to class a few hours after the surgery, with only a minor swollen lip. The entire experience was not difficult at all, and I recommend it, contingent upon my belief that the later return of my 'cele is not, in fact, the much-delayed result of a past surgery!)
I had mucocele removal surgery in June 2007, and mine has not recurred.
Did they also remove your salivary gland? Mine got removed during the surgery. Just wondering if they did not remove your salivary gland, that might be why it came back?
I was knocked out for the surgery, and had a lot of pain afterwards. They had to not only cut my lip, but also down into the floor of my mouth to get the "roots" of the mucocele out.
I still have numbness (both outside and inside my mouth) on my lower lip on that side, as well as a scar inside my mouth that I can feel with my tongue.
