So i have this clear lump in my mouth with a slight blue tint and its driving me nuts.you can see it when i talk or smile. when i take pictures with friends you can see the bump outside of my lip, its so in your face.I'm very frustrated and embarressed. It feels like it goes down sometimes then comes back larger. I know i need it removed but i don't have dental insurance. when some of you say that it drains what exactly happens? my lump has never done that it just gets smaller then flairs up again. do all mucoceles drain or can some do what mine does? i am also a smoker could the lump be cancer? i'm scared.

sad lady with a lump,

I felt a small bump on the right side of my lower lip on Friday and thought it was a canker sore. I was driving home for lunch and bit it pretty hard which was really painful - by Fri night it was really inflamed, and when I woke up on Saturday it was really big. I thought I had just infected it so I took Ibuprofen and iced it which worked because it went down a lot Sat night/Sunday. Then yesterday I woke up, and it was back to it's original size. I still didn't know what it was, but I had decided to take a needle and puncture it to drain it. My mom freaked out and sent me to the dentist who sent me to an oral surgeon. He told me I probably could have done it (be sure its sterilized..), but odds are it would have closed back up and just refilled the sack. I decided to have it removed rather than hope it goes away naturally. Really, having surgery yesterday was the last thing I expected, but I'm glad it is taken out now. I'm not going to lie, it's super painful today and swollen, but I think it'll be gone soon. My dental insurance didn't cover it - they said it was a medical insurance deal because it was surgery. Too bad I have a 1k deductible on insurance - the surgery was supposed to be $700, but the surgeon only charged me $325... yay me.

Hi sad lady with a lump. Sounds like my story. Just came out of no where. I was on vacation in Punta Cana and thought since i have never had a bump/lump or anything wrong with me, it must be a fish bone or something in my bottom lip. I tried taking it out and it just kept getting larger. It ended up the size of a nickel.

Who did your surgery, and how many stitches, i had about ten, and when i healed half my lip fullness was gone on the bottom left hand side.

I'm driving my husband nuts. I've cried off and on for days, and I'm no longer speaking the same. I have numbness, and can't feel kisses well.

I'm sad..

((((care to Elle))))

Your story sounds similar to mine.  I just woke up one morning and had a kind of clear marble on the inside of my lower lip.  It did not go away, I tried to "pop" it with a safety pin, and thick, clear liquid came out, but the next morning, the mucocele was back to the same size it had been before.  After a few weeks, it turned grey, so I was worried and went to the doctor, who referred me to an oral surgeon.

I had my mucocele removal surgery 1 1/2 years ago, and after the surgery (for a few weeks, best as I can remember), I could not move that side of my mouth.  Of course, my drivers' license was up then, so I have the absolute stupidest look on my face in that picture (one side of my mouth is hanging open!) and it is still on my license!!  Also I do remember speaking funny (because of my mouth hanging open), those side effects, for me, were temporary, so have hope that you will be feeling and talking much better within a few weeks.

The not being able to move that side of my mouth did go away.  I do still have numbness in that lip on that side, both inside and outside of my mouth, and I have a scar inside my mouth, that I can feel with my tongue.

Elle, I hope you have a speedy recovery, try not to be sad, because you should be pretty much back to normal in a few weeks.  Like any surgery, this one also needs recuperation time.

Take Care, and Best Wishes,

Christy
