So, I've had this lump on the inside of my lower lip just below the corner of my mouth. It's been there so long now I can't even quite remember how long, I'd say at least 5 years. It started out small and I thought was a little canker sore. It has never hurt. It's grown very gradually over the years. It's now a little bigger than a pea size I'd say. It has looked from kinda clear to now more of a whitish color. It doesn't seem fluid filled like described by others. I can bite it and it feels more hardish than fluid, like fatty tissue feeling. I've seen a dentist at least twice a year and none of them have ever even asked me about it. I know I should bring it up myself, but it's been embarrassing. Since it's been so long I'm not too worried that it's cancer, but I guess you never know. It's more bothersome than anything because sometimes I accidentally bite it when eating. Any thoughts? Thanks

I'm no doctor, but I feel the fact that it has been there so long and has been gradually but continuously growing is more reason to believe it's cancer. Not trying to scare you but I think it's worth getting checked out.

I wouldn't automatically assume that something that's been there a while, or something that is growing is cancer. Don't be afraid. Go see your dentist and see if they can send you to someone that can remove it and biopsy it. Don't wait. Never good to wait. Don't be afraid, I know it's scary, but waiting is the worst thing to do. My lump was removed a little over a month ago. Things are getting better for me now in regards to healing. It took until last week for my lip to start to look semi natural again. Keep in mind, if they remove tissue, your lip will not look exactly the same. Tissue out, especially if it's big, means you might loose some fullness to your lip. The longer you leave it and the larger it grows, the harder the lump will be to remove, more scarring and more healing time. Mine turned out to be a mucocele thank goodness.. wish you good luck. Make an appointment like i did and just get it outta there! Elle

I had mine done 12/9. See a ENT plastic surgeon M.D. who is well recommended by your primary care physician The best results come from the best surgeons. They biopsy the mycocele to see if it is malignant. The dentist or oral surgeon can do it however expect to pay substantially more as it is not covered by your medial insurance! You will be able to work immediately and the lip heals fast so expect to be well within a week without a scar. It will cost me $20 co pay for the procedure and $20 co pay for the biopsy.

There's absolutely no reason to be embarrassed.  Ask you dentist and/or go to an oral surgeon.

I went to an oral surgeon and he filed it under HEALTH insurance, not dental insurance and it was covered.

They coded the removal procedure just as a "biopsy" and I had no insurance problem.

A biopsy is ALWAYS going to be covered by health insurance.  ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS.

Ask your surgeon how they code it.
