General post surgery questions
I just had my surgery exactly 24 hours ago, and me being the worrisome person that I am, am freaking out. It's all swollen and bruised, and right around the stitches seems too tight, etc.
I wasn't given any prescriptions for pain, or to fight off infection or anything, so I've been taking ibuprofen for the pain, but I'm just worried that it's not enough?
Basically, do my symptoms sound normal for where I'm at after the surgery right now? And is there something I can do to make sure I don't get infected, and to help my lip heal faster and so it doesn't get all deformed?
My only other question is this: Before I got my mucocele, I had my lip pierced. I had it probably half a year before I bit my lip the one evening, and well, you know the rest of that story. The dentist confirmed for me that it wasn't the piercing that caused it, but that'd I'd still have to take it out for the surgery, and of course when I did, it closed up. But, since it wasn't the piercing, do you think it'll be safe to get re-pierced once everything is all healed up and better?
You might see if the surgeon who did it or your dentist would give you a script for Peridex...an antibiotic rinse...otherwise I'd rinse several times a day with Listerine. You can ice the area to keep the swelling down, but it does take some time.
Just to kinda update, I went back to the surgeon the other day just as a follow up, and he said everything is healing just fine, and that the scar tissue that formed around the incision should soften up to nothing, and that my lip should go back to being symmetrical within a few months. I definitely recommend the surgery... it can be a hassle during the healing process, but in the long run it's a better choice.
I don't mean to discourage you, but you may be on a soft only diet for a while. I ate a TON of pudding and jello, lots of milkshakes, etc. Anything that I could eat through a straw pretty much. When I did eat solid food, I had to eat in very small bites, which I actually don't recommend. Some of my stitches actually came out (what I believe to be) prematurely because of that. Just take it slow, and be careful, and you'll be fine. I actually have bit my lip since my surgery, nothing major, and nothing to worry about. But, if you have some nerve damage like I do, be careful, cause if you bite that it WILL hurt! Haha.
At this point, I'm going on almost two months since surgery, and most of the feeling in my lip is back, and you now have to look really close to even be able to tell that I had anything done. Most of the scar tissue is dissolved.
