Small, hard, white lump in the roof of my mouth. Been there at least a year! Pictures included
Hi all,
I'm new to these forums. I've been concerned lately about a small lump in my mouth. It's been there for at least a year if memory serves me correctly. Because of its size and placement I sometimes forget it is there though I feel I need to get it identified incase it is something more seriouse.
The lump is about 1/4 size of a pea. It is fairly hard and white. I picked it off years ago with my nails, though it seems to grow back and a little bigger when I do that. Here is a pretty graphic photo I took. I'm hoping someone here can give me their interpretation/diagnosis of what this could be.
cheers all!

Hey Gus!
From the looks of your picture, it looks like a mucocele. I had one in the same spot as you, almost a year ago. I think you should go to the dentist to get it checked out if you haven't already just to be sure. Your dentist will probably refer you to an oral surgeon. Try not to pick at it. My oral surgeon was concerned about infection setting up if you pick and burst it. Besides picking and bursting it will only take it longer to heal. When my mucocele burts, i used peroxide to bubble out germs and at night, I used the primrose oil compress like some other posters in this forum. Get some gauze or tissue and fold it in small squares. Get a evening primrose oil pill, pierce it, and put some on the gauze or tissue. Place the little compress on it at night and remove in the morning. Do it every night. Try that out and see if it works. Let us know what happens! Good luck!

hey rgl,
thanks for the advice. I will try the primrose oil. How many nights did you apply this until you began to notice it dissapearing?
The lump is quite hard (is that normal) and unlikely to burst on its own. It's also been there for a year or so, so might be quite deep a I was thinking it might require surgery.

Hey Gus:
I used the primrose oil until I noticed my mucocele getting smaller and smaller. The day I went to my oral surgeon, he said he could not see any sign of the mucocele. I told him it burst that morning and he said if it came back he would remove it because after it bursts, you have an open sore in your mouth and he was concerned about infection setting up. But it never came back. My mucocele was kinda soft, like a ballon. It was about as big as the head on a straight pen.
I remember you said you would pick at it with your fingernail. That could be the reason why it is hard and could be much deeper due to scarring. Still go take a visit to your dentist. In the meanwhile, don't pick at it. Try the primrose compress every night. If it bursts on its own, use a Q-tip and put some peroxide in it or rinse your mouth with Listerine or some oral antiseptic, to keep it from getting infected. Let us know what happens!
