Hi All,
I'm totally stressed out about the nodule that was found by my dentist. He only said he felt something i should get a biopsy. I looked in my mouth and saw a small lump {nodule} under my tougue in the connective tissue area. It has a bluish tint to it. I researced it and came up with the term mucous retention cyst which is either a mucocle or ranula. I'm now sort of parylized with fear of going to check it further. I could go to a oral surgeon who will probably want to take a biopsy or to an ENT. I'm not covered for dental but I'm covered for medical insurance. Either way I would like to know if it is necessary to get a biopsy. i'm hoping it is a renula but dont want to find out it's cancer. if it is a mucocele was it necessary to take a biopsy? Why if a renula is a type of  retention cyst would a biopsy be necessary?

They will do a biopsy JUST to make sure.  Rannula is just another name for a mucocele on the floor of your mouth...like you're talking about.  An oral surgeon might be able to bill it to your medical insurance...mine did.

Believe me....if it was cancer you would want to find out...and if it isn't you'd want to know for peace of mind.  Docs can always tell you what they think, and they're probably right...but no way to be 100% sure without doing a biopsy.  Good luck...I recommend you do it.

So, I had a problem like this when I was younger. My spit calicified in my lymph node. I jsut went to the doc and they gave me a numbing shot and just took it out. I have always had a small incision from where they cut it out but no pain. I honestly wouldn't worry about the biopsy. I was 14 when I had my surgery. So hopefully it won't be too bad for you. :)
