My experience and home treatment
Hi everyone, thought I'd share what happened to me, cos its a funny little lump in mouth community here, and it makes me smile. Anyways, everyone's different and if you have a big and deep one in a tough location, this might not be for you, but this is my experience.
I have one on my lower lip, and it was never massive, but it got annoying by bumping into my teeth or whatever. I only had it for a few weeks, then I cut it open at the tip of the bubble (this was before I knew what it was, and before I read not to puncture it or whatever) with cuticle scissors. This allowed it to drain, and I recommend doing this or using pins (always sterile) like I've read here. Gentle sucking (never biting) works well. Anyways, once I did that, I rinsed in the area with Tom's Natural Mint Baking Soda mouthwash for two minutes about 4 times a day. I later read that alum or baking soda has qualities that keeps the wound from healing. This mouthwash also has tons of natural ingredients, and I have no idea if they had a placebo effect, but in about 5-6 days, the bump was basically gone.
3 weeks later it came back from nowhere very quickly. People say mucoceles don't hurt, and while that's true, it came back in minutes and I felt a bit of discomfort. Weird, lol. Anyways, the hole was still there in the mucocele from the scissors (I don't know how, as the whole thing seemed to be gone) and so its still draining. I used the mouthwash again, and it only took 3-4 days to disappear.
It came back again 4 weeks later, I did the same thing, and it was gone in 2 days. Each cycle the bump was smaller and higher up as well, sort of like I was drawing it out. I expect it to come back again, but maybe for the last time. But if it comes back with a vengeance I'll post that here too.
All this said, I didn't have the mucocele very long, so it hasn't gotten too deep or embedded in my lip. I rarely bit it, I just gently sucked it. So if yours is uber serious, this might not work. But if its new and sort of medium sized, I don't recommend surgery. My common sense tells me that removing a chunk of lip is a serious procedure, and if something this simple works, then try it.
As an aside, I don't recommend this mouthwash for teeth, as it has glycerine in it, like most toothpastes. I brush with natural (not dove or other detergents) bar soap, and if you're interested please look it up, your teeth can't get cleaner. Fluoride and glycerine do NOT help teeth.
