Identification, Home Remedies and Removal
I recently learned that I had a mucocele on my bottom lower lip. My fiance tried to convince me it was a canker sore, but I knew that wasn't it. I searched around online, found this site and determined it was a mucocele. It was approximately the size of a pea.
I tried using home remedies such as Biotene Toothpaste and Mouth Rinse, putting alum and/or salt on it twice a day, but it didn't seem to be going away. I contacted an oral surgeon I found through my health insurance and they confirmed that I would need to get it cut out.
Within two weeks, I had identified the mucocele, met with an oral surgeon, made an appointment for the surgery and had it cut out. My surgery went really well and now it has been three days and the swelling (which was minor to begin with) has mostly gone down. I have to tell you, after reading some of the horror stories on these message boards, I really had myself worked up. It hasn't been a big deal at all. There was next to no after care (ice it for two hours) and I have been able to eat, drink and talk just as I did before (albeit carefully as the stitches are a little snug). A bonus was that the doctor used flesh colored sutures so it is barely noticeable, if at all. I didn't require much in the way of pain medication; an ibproferin the day of the surgery, but that was it.
I will be posting a couple of pictures in the recovery section in a few more days. Overall, my experience has been positive and I would definitely recommend the surgery.
