Surgery is no joke
This is day 4 since my initial surgery and it's been really difficult. Unfortunately, there's a reason why you don't see too many posts here that say stuff like "I did the surgery, it went smoothly, everything is great now."
Things were going fairly well until yesterday morning when I woke up with my face covered in blood - my soft/dissolvable stitches had come apart in my sleep and my wound was oozing. Luckily, my amazing oral surgeon was willing to see me early on a Saturday morning and cauterize/re-stitch the wound - this time with heavier stitches that will need to be taken out. Swelling is down 24 hours after my second stitching, but there's a lump on the top of the affected region that's more visible than the mucocele - I'm hoping that this is just the swelling and not scar tissue that will last for months.
Some advice for anyone who's going to get the surgery:
1. Get the surgery sooner rather than later if the mucocele does not respond to saltwater/EPO/whatever. The more it grows, the bigger the incision, the longer the healing time.
2. See an experienced oral surgeon who can do the procedure in his sleep. Ensure that the surgeon is very thorough about removing all nearby salivary glands so you don't get another. Ask questions.
3. Have LOTS of ice packs and soft food ready when you get home.
4. Explain to anyone who will be taking care of you that you will not be able to talk too much following surgery and that they should not expect you to respond to questions or suggestions.
5. Ice Ice Ice Ice Ice! It'll minimize swelling and prevent bruising.
6. Don't take chances! Eat slowly, don't talk too much, don't watch anything that will make you laugh too hard. Let your mouth heal before you do too much with it.
7. DO ANYTHING YOU CAN TO ENSURE THAT YOU SLEEP ON YOUR BACK. This sucks for people like me who like to sleep on their face, but do what you can. I really wish my doctors had warned me about this possibility.
Good luck to anyone dealing with this awful little problem. Finally, I agree with the many posters who have said that it's crazy that surgeons don't issue strong pain meds following this operation. This sh*t hurts!!
