Scar tissue - how to deal with it

My little update: three weeks almost post surgery. Well it has been a long saga. I saw the surgeon on Monday and two weeks post surgery, the stitches were still there so he told me to put toothpaste on them and give them a good rub. Well, I have to say in my case this did not work and I ended up having a lot of pain in my stitches. I wish he had taken the time to just remove the stitches. I saw a nurse in my local health centre who removed them for me and it was immediate relief. The pain I was having in one of my stitches went immediately. But now I am left with quite a bit of scar tissue and it is quite bumpy so my lip doesn't feel like it has gone back to normal as I can feel this bump rubbing against my upper lip. Nothing visible but I am scared another evil mucocele will show up. The other thing is a tiny bit of pus comes out sometimes from another bit where there used to be a stitch - strangely not the one that was painful, It doesn't hurt or anything. I keep rinsing with salt water to help prevent infection. I think what has happened here is that the stiches were left for too long and now I am paying the price for it. They should have fallen out naturally but didn't :(
What is the best way to deal with scar tissue? Anyone else worried about the way it felt in your lip which reminded you of your old mucocele?
God Bless this forum, don't know where else I could go to talk about this.

Sorry to hear about the stitches! The doctor thought it was best to leave them alone as well. It took almost a month until all of mine came out too, and for some reason I have a sneaking suspicion some may still be in there. Probably not, although I remember during the time I thought that all of the stitches were gone, and there was this tiny little flap sticking out. I thought it was loose skin and used tweezers to investigate. I pulled at it and a quarter-inch long stitch came easily sliding out, which made me wonder if it wasn't poking out would it still have been in there? As for scar tissue, the doctor said to massage the lump with your thumb and pointer finger a couple times a day. He said this loosens it and makes it a bit softer. I kept it up for four months, and I didn't see any results so I forgot about. About a year later (present day), the scar and the lump is still there. I asked the doctor about rubbing lotion on it, as I've read on here was supposed to help with the scar tissue, and he said that it doesn't really do anything, it's moreso massaging it. He says it helps with any scar. Sorry to say, but the lump will stay. Thanks for updating your experience with us! Are you glad to have gone through with it?

Hello,
Thanks for your post.

I think I am glad I went through it because the actual mucocele was quite big and really starting to bother me and make me self-conscious. But the recovery was not much fun and leaving the stitches so long really hurt. I just wish now all went back to normal quickly but that scar tissue is not too big but I feel it inside my lip so it reminds me a bit of the mucocele. As long as it is not one, I can live with that!
I will try your massage techniques, thanks for the tip!
