My mucocele experience!

After reading this site for weeks, I decided to share how mine went away.

Initially I had tried the "Alum/Listerine" method, and all that would happen would be minimal decreased size. I got frustrated and took a small needle, and poked a hole in it, draining all the puss. Of course it filled back up the next day.

I then scheduled an ENT doctor visit. When I got there he said mine was "one of the biggest he'd seen" and wouldnt just remove it in the office, I had to have general anesthesia so he could "control the bleeding" if needed. What he did do in the office was take a syringe and drain it out again, it refilled later.

I called the hospital and asked them an est cost for the procedure... It was about 1,000$ WITH insurance, so I told them to shove it, in hopes of finding an ENT that would do it in office. Best decision I ever made, canceling that is.

I had a week to wait for my next appointment, and it was driving me crazy, so I brought a bottle of listerine to work and used it several times a day. By the time my appointment rolled around, mind you I've had the mucocele for 6 weeks at this point, it was about half its original size.

I even stopped the listerine, and it continued to decrease in size, until it went flat within the next week. Now, I can't even tell it was there, and I didn't even get surgery done. Its been a month and a half, and I couldn't be happier.

My advice is to wait it out, avoid touching it with your tounge and rough foods, maybe yours will disappear on its own!

I agree that it may very possibly disappear on its own. My first one lasted for way too long though, for months I think, and it was extremely obvious whenever I talked. It was getting rather embarrassing. So I decided to do the surgery, it was really expensive and the healing period was worse than I expected. I still feel slight numbness on my lip, and its been many months. But it was worth it because I knew that one was definitely NOT going to go away. My second one appeared about a week ago, and I was completely devastated, especially since my prom's around the corner. It got really inflamed because I accidentally bit on it. I decided to do nothing about it and left it alone, and now, it's gone! :) It doesn't seem like it's going to refill, because I can't even see anything on my lip anymore. So my advice for anyone out there contemplating surgery is WAIT! Leave it alone, don't play with it, don't touch it. It may just go away. If it bursts and refills for a prolonged of time, however, then see a doctor and get some advice on what to do. Mine went away in a week so don't lose hope! Yours may very well go away on its own too!
