Hey, goingcrazy. Funny story about your doctor - like out of a sitcom or something.
My doctor punctured my mucocele before referring me to an oral surgeon. It brought down the size, but it came back shortly after. You can have a doctor or a dentist refer you to an oral surgeon. The way some health insurance plans go, you may need a referral - best to check with yours, but you might be able to just go direct to the oral surgeon.

Very interesting that you have seen so many doctors in so many places. I got mine surgically removed, and I wouldn't change a thing about that if I had to do it again.

From what I have heard, you can get a mucocele anywhere there's a salivary gland, so I think it would be possible under the tongue. In my not-professional opinion, that's a mucocele, but really, you should get it checked out.

Pretty good surgery video, but definitely not for the squeamish!

Wow, pretty amazing story

You should definitely get this checked out, soup. Let us know how it goes.

It doesn't sound like anything that I am familiar with - get it checked out and let us know how it goes.

Sounds like a mucocele, but you better see a doctor!

Hey Misa, it doesn't sound alarming to me, but you could call your doctor just to be sure. Don't do any heavy-duty laughing or smiling for awhile though :)

It's only been two days? Don't freak out! I had to hold my lip every time I smiled or laughed for nearly two weeks after my surgery. Let us know how it goes!

Wow, that's crazy - thanks for sharing that. You probably weren't able to remove any surrounding glands either, so you may find one reappearing in that area soon. Please do keep us updated.

That does suck, Christie. I don't know what to tell you - did he take out all of the glands surrounding the main clogged one? I wish I could recommend a good doctor for you, but maybe you should try a different one?

It doesn't sound like anything super debilitating is going to happen from this - I mean, the main objective is to have the area cut up and the Mucocele extracted, right? If that isn't going to ruin things, I don't imagine that biting it a couple of times will be super awful.
August 30, 2007 by kadavy
Well, it doesn't sound super unusual, but it obviously isn't ideal. I didn't personally experience this level of discomfort 10 weeks after surgery, but of course, it differs for everyone. If nothing else, it's better than having the Mucocele, right?
August 30, 2007 by kadavy
I don't know if Mucocele's occur directly on the lips - they more commonly appear inside of the lip, where there is such an abundance of salivary glands to get clogged. If you can go directly to an oral surgeon, that sounds like a good bet, but you may need to get a referral from a general physician first.
Let us know how it goes!

Whoa, thanks for posting the photos! Keep us posted, I hope everything clears up okay.

Yikes, that sounds like a not great surgical experience. I wish I could make a recommendation, but I lived in Nebraska at the time. Come back and let us know who does a good job!

I agree with ydna that you may as well wait. There is no reason to remove the mucocele unless it is bothering your son - except for the (probably astronomically slim to impossible) chance that it is actually cancer.

I was eating lots of soup during my recovery. That's about it - it was a nice little change in diet because I lived near a Panera that had different soups every day.

I'm glad you're getting feeling back, Ackhelp. I also think it would be a good idea to wait a bit before getting it fixed.
spumanti, it sounds like your surgery was rough.
The pictures you were talking about were actually almost identical to my situation, so I guess experiences vary quite a bit!

Hi Homebrew, I think I've heard some on this forum mention mucoceles disappearing, but from what I've heard, don't count on it. I certainly haven't heard of any topical creams that have been able to treat mucoceles either. I haven't heard of chewing contributing to mucoceles - just oral cancer - but I would think in theory that having a substance like that in your mouth could irritate salivary glands and lead to mucoceles.
July 7, 2007 by kadavy
Thanks for posting your story, ydna. Yeah, the doctor that removed my mucocele wasn't a plastic surgeon either, and everything worked fine for me.

Hey ratty, thanks for posting the picture of Oscar! That has been diagnosed as a mucocele? Wow, I haven't seen one like that yet - keep us updated!

As I understand it, the Mucocele actually IS the salivary gland. They can reoccur though, since there are many salivary glands in your lip and it's easy for those adjacent to the Mucocele get damaged during removal. When I had mine removed, the doctor plucked about a dozen salivary glands out of my lip in the area around the Mucocele.
April 13, 2007 by kadavy
Sorry to say, but I think the limit to the number of times they can come back is equal to the number of salivary glands you have. I would imagine it's pretty easy for a new mucocele to even be caused during surgery to remove one...since you're aggravating glands in that same area. I wouldn't think it would be very common to have them to recur, but maybe your son bites his lip in his sleep or something.

From the accounts I've heard, there shouldn't be any risk in waiting a few months. Some people on here have had them for years! Sometimes they can get big and annoying, though.
April 1, 2007 by kadavy
Hey man, chill! True, my Mucocele didn't hurt, so you better get it checked out. I think you can go straight to an Oral Surgeon, but maybe you need a referral? When I had my Mucocele removed, they only used local anesthetic. Let us know how it goes!
March 29, 2007 by kadavy
I would imagine that it would be possible for someone to get mucocele's where you described. It seems like a good place for those teeth to chew on and cause a mucocele, but you definitely need to see a doctor to find out. Let us know how it goes!

Hey there. Mine didn't really look blue either. Wait a bit and if it doesn't go away, see a doctor.
