Re: Help...Need advice from experienced Mucocele people!!!

It looks like a mucocele to me, but only a doctor can diagnose you.

If it is a mucocele and is too expensive to remove at this time, you needn't worry. It is purely cosmetic so it just depends how long you can live with it!

Re: How I got rid of it using Listerine!

Wow! I've never heard of a mucocele being treated this way.

Where did you hear about this treatment? Was it recommended by a doctor?

I can't bring myself to hit the play button! Just the still image looks terrible!

Re: is this a mucocele? Help! Picture included

July 16, 2008 by pltjess

Hi st34!

It's definitely hard to make anything out in that picture, but even if we could, the only way to know is to see a doctor!

Is the lump painful?

I wouldn't worry about salt water not changing it, since that will not remove a mucocele anyway.

Glad it went well, hopefully the massaging helps your scar tissue out! (It didn't help with mine, but I didn't have laser surgery either)

Re: How much does your mucocele suck?

August 18, 2007 by pltjess

If you're sure nothing was removed minithin, then you probably have a good chance of the mucocele returning. For a successful removal the salivary glands need to be removed.

Ouch, sounds painful Christie! I definitely wouldn't recommend ever biting the mucocele!

Good to hear you're heading to the ENT, I hope you come up with a resolution!

Good luck to you both in getting rid of the hard tissue, and regaining feeling. It's been 1-2 years for me, and I can still feel the line of scar tissue and have not regained feeling in one area of my lip. One a positive note though, it does not bother me in the least bit anymore, I actually don't even notice it. So, don't worry, you can still kiss just fine. =)

Post-mucocele

June 8, 2007 by pltjess

It's been quite a while since I had the surgery, at least a year, maybe two? I can't really remember anymore.

Anyway, where the incision was is a small section of hard tissue. It's not noticeable to the eye, but I can feel it with my tongue. Once in a while, if my lower lip gets pushed against my teeth (if I bump my mouth on something) I sometimes feel a pain in the tissue. Anyone else ever have this problem?

Ackhelp, I've been reading so many of your posts, and I wish this hadn't happened to you! I also was just told the basic puffiness/soreness after surgery, but no warnings about any other possible problems. It sucks that you face future surgery, but I hope everything works out with it!

Re: Freezing

June 8, 2007 by pltjess

I've never heard of anyone having one frozen off. Could this actually work? I would think surgery would be inevitable since you need to remove the salivary gland. Would this somehow be affected by freezing?

I agree with sport1, you'll need to take your daughter to the doctor to know for sure. I also think it looks like a mucocele, but I've only my own experience to base that on. Even if you were sure it was only a mucocele though, you should speak with your doctor about removal and the chances of it going away on its own. There was no way my mucocele was going away without surgery.

Best of luck!

Re: A New Diagnosis... A Lesion That Is Not A Mucocele.

May 6, 2007 by pltjess

Did the lesion and mucocele look very similar? I'm curious to see how many times they are misdiagnosed as each other if they do.

Re: Mucocele Removed By Painless Surgery

Good to hear things went smoothly for you jabhiji. How are things going now? Do you have all sensation in your lip? Is there any swelling?

I'm curious to see the differences between laser and incisions.

Re: How did you get your Mucocele?

March 18, 2007 by pltjess

Pinky, I got my mucocele from biting my lip. I manage to bite my lip fairly often while I'm eating and not so gently either.

Numbness? When will it go away

March 18, 2007 by pltjess

RNNY,
The swelling will definitely go down, but as for the numbness, it may stick around. The swelling mostly went down for me within a week, but I'm now years from my surgery and I still have a small numb spot on my lip. There's not really any chance of the feeling coming back for me, but I know others have had feeling slowly come back within a couple of months, and many don't have any numbness at all.

Hi sport1!

I can only speak for my own experiences, but I was one of those that had a mucocele that only went away with surgery. I did not have a problem with it going away and coming back though, mine was just a constant bubble for months and it didn't change size at all. It's just a guess, but maybe with one like mine that never changed surgery is the best option but for those that change a lot they may dissapear. Who knows!

Re: just had mine removed! I have a question about stitches though....

December 16, 2006 by pltjess

Like kadavy said, I would call your doctor about those stitches falling out the same day. Mine took about a week to fall out, which I thought was really early for it to happen, but that was alright.

Some dentists might. I went to an oral surgeon for my procedure.

Re: Mucocele

The numbness may or may not stick around, numblip. It's been well over a year now since I had my mucocele removed, and I still have a small numb spot on my lip. I believe what my doctor said was that the feeling may come back within something like 6 months from the surgery time. I'm well past that now, so I've learned to live with it. I know it's quite an annoying feeling, but after a while you will stop noticing it.

Re: I am stumped about what is going on with my tongue and could use help

December 16, 2006 by pltjess

That does sound uncomfortable! I know I would want something done about it as well, so I suppose you could try to get a second opinion. Perhaps someone else has some other ideas for you other than "wait and see." If it's just a regular old mucocele, waiting and seeing what happens most likely means nothing will happen. If you can't see someone else, you'll just have to persist about doing something about it with your current ENT.

I was scared enoug at 19 to have the surger done; I can't imagine having it done at 10! If your daughter does decide that she might be able to handle the surgery though, you should know that it is completely painless. I kept my eyes closed the entire time and had no idea what was happening. I still imagine this would be scary for her, but I'm sure if she wanted it to go away, she could do it.

Keep us updated on what you and your daughter decide on, and good luck.

Re: a week later

November 16, 2006 by pltjess

The scar tissue will generally shrink a little bit over time. Massage it and it should help.

The feeling may return, or may not. It's been over a year and I still have no feeling, but you'll get more used to it.

Re: Laser Surgery as an Alternative

November 16, 2006 by pltjess

I've never heard anything about lasers at all... Have you heard anything about whether it's painful or not?

Re: My mucocele removal

November 16, 2006 by pltjess

I'm glad everything went well for you. I am surprised though that they used general anesthesia. Did your doctor tell you why he did that instead of local?

Re: Mucocele Concern

November 16, 2006 by pltjess

I have heard of people popping their mucoceles, but most of the time they also say they reappeared. I'd suggest you stop popping it and go see a doctor about it, just to be sure it is a mucocele. I've also never heard of any treatments other than surgery, but it's not as bad as you may think! It's painless, I promise!

Re: 2 weeks post-surgery

November 16, 2006 by pltjess

It's been well over a year since I had my mucocele removed, and I still have some hardened scar tissue. I have not been massaging it regularly, so I'm not sure about how much that helps, but I have noticed it has gotten progressively smaller. It took me a few months to get back to feeling "normal" again as far as smiling and eating chewier foods. So, just give it some more time, be gentle on it, and keep massaging!

Re: my mococule story followed by post-surgery questions...

October 19, 2006 by pltjess

Hi, it's been a year since I had mine removed and it has not come back. (at least I think it was a year... but I could be wrong!) I do still have scar tissue that is noticeable, but to me only. It's just a line of skin on the inside of my lip that feels hard, but I don't notice it while eating/talking, or anything of that sort. I wouldn't worry about the scar tissue too much, it's generally very tiny, and no one else can see it!

Re: surgery on monday

Mine was also on the inside of the lower lip and I didn't have any problems with swelling. Hopefully the same will go for you! Good luck with the surgery, and don't forget to update us!
