mild ache in and around surgerey area

May 3, 2008 by revsherm

Anybody else experience this?

Closing in on a year since I had mine removed. The muccocele has not come back. yet several times a day I'll get a mild ache around the scar tissue. I wen't back to my ENT specialist who removed it. he sees no visible signs of another muccocele or cancer.

Re: Do I have one?

May 3, 2008 by revsherm

yeah if it was cancer it would not go away and come back, and it would be more painful as time went on.

I quit after almost 20 years of using Skoal fine cut. had a muccocele back on my soft palate by my uvula. and yes I get paranoid as well. But my ENTsaid there were no signs of cancer or even pre cancer around the area. Funny the scar where it was removed is basically a white patch, which freaked me out also. but the ENT specialist said it was normal and just the scar.

My muccocele has been gone with no flare ups for six months. I sometimes get a numb ache in or around the area a few times a day. i went back and the doctor said he could not see anything. He said once you are aware of something in your mouth, you become aware of every little ache and pain.

I do well...I go several weeks without one...yet I get cravings and once every few weeks will take a dip

was it easy for you to quit?

Re: How about this location in the mouth?
Absolutely. Thank you for the reply. You're right it's not looking like oral cancer... Should I just see a dentist or see my primary care doctor? Even an experienced dentist can't make a diagnosis right?
a dentist can do a brush biopsy and they do know more about mouth conditions then a MD might.

Re: Can anyone refer me to a good surgeon in vancouver bc?

ask your dentist or doctor to refer one.

I can relate to the whole looking normal to another person thing LOL. It looks different to us, but nobody else can see it. I know that because lump or tissue from the scar is always there...I find myself feeling it with my tongue quite a bit LOL

Re: How I got rid (I hope) of my mucocele

January 16, 2008 by revsherm
I wish I'd tried that first. Mine was done so badly it is a constant source of irritation and my lifes mission has been to figure out how to put it right. However I read when you pierce it you need to thread it with cotton and tie a knot in it and leave it for about a week and it drops off. If I could rewrite the history I would have done that but the doctor told me she would drain it and I didn't consent to having my lips completely mutilated. They make out its nothing and it is a big deal. If nothing works then go for surgery but try everything first. Surgery is brutal and final. Bad surgery feels infinitely worse than any bump.

Let us know how you get on.

may I ask how long you have been living with your mucocele?

I have been dealing with and having them removed for over a year. my ENT doctor finally said he did not want to try removing them any more since the surgery is causinf more to erupt.

When I said they were harmless, I meant they will not kill you, but they are extremely annoying and can be painful.

it's part of the healing process, mine also appeared that way. you most likely will develop a scar like I did..which will look white also and feel like a lump. Mine were up on my soft palate however.

Re: How about this location in the mouth?

January 16, 2008 by revsherm

get it checked out. it sounds harmless.. it doesnt sound like oral cancer....but better safe then sorry

tingling or burning sensation

January 12, 2008 by revsherm

From reading, I've noticed most of you have yours on your lower lips. Mine is on my soft palate. I've had them removed twice, my doctor says If I can live with it, then he doesnt want to remove another yet again.

My question is when yours flares up or started to flare up...does it feel like a burning sensation? the best way I can descride it is a mild burning...or "tearing" feeling.

how often does yours swell? mine seems like evey two days...four about a few weeks...then seems to do dormate for a few weeks.

most times yaker the little hole is there anyway, what a mucocele is, is a mucous retention cyst. the "bubble" is when it swells up before it drains. Mine is on my soft palate near my uvula, and the bump or "hole" is always there, it just flares up every few days. I've learned to live with it, and my doctor says it's harmless...if you can live with it...fine...but you might want to get it removed.

Re: A Muco-what?

December 24, 2007 by revsherm

it sounds like a mucocele. Yes it could very well be from the punch that long ago. It could take a while for the mucocele to show up after trauma. But I'd get your dentist to take a look at it and see what he or she thinks.

Anybody else's doctor bring this option up?

December 22, 2007 by revsherm

Instead of removing another one. He said we could do two things. One live with it..since it's on my soft palate it's really only a mild annoyance every few days.

the second option was slicing it off so that it will drain and not seal shut again.

He was trying to think of a way I could do it myself...but I'd rather not perform home oral surgery on myself LOL..He said I could try scraping it off with my finger nail.

I've decided to live with it and unless it changes doing nothing.

anybody else have their ENT specialist or oral surgeon mention "slicing" as an option?

Re: Antibiotics

first time I got antibiotics, second time he just told me to rinse with warm salt water.

Re: Do I have one?

December 19, 2007 by revsherm

mine did not occur on my lip, but on my soft palate. I had a tooth pick jab me, then the removal of my mucocele caused another...then the removal of that one caused another LOL..I'm learning to live with it.

can you tell when it's about to flare up?

I start to get a tingling thats how I know

I imagine it's much more uncomfortable on the lip

Re: Recurrence After Three Weeks

December 19, 2007 by revsherm

Hi Allure, yes I was concerned about the scar tissue as well. It looked red and white, but my ENT specialist, my family doctor, and my dentist all looked at it and said they couldnt see anything and what I saw and feel is the scar tissue. LOL

I'm not a doctor, so I don't want to tell you what you should do. I believe most mucocele's are clear or white. does it behave like the other ones? does it swell up and drain like before? does it tingle when you are about to get it? Is it sore? Does it go away? thats the BIG difference..oral cancer does not come and go..it continues to become worse and worse.

I would say that if it is coming back in the same area, then it's likely to be scar tissue or another mucocele, but ask your doctor if it is bothering you.

But if it is only a mucocle, then you can live with it, they are pretty much harmless...other then being a pain in the neck..or mouth LOL.

I've just decided that unless it changes, I'm gonna live with it, because I'm getting tired of having my mouth cut into a few times a year.

Re: Soft palate mucocele

December 16, 2007 by revsherm

Hey Johnny, like you I used smokeless tobacco for almost 20 years....needless to say...getting my mucocele was a blessing I've been Skoal free for almost a year.

though I have not been mucocle free...but I've learned to live with them.

Re: Recurrence After Three Weeks

December 16, 2007 by revsherm

For over a year I have had them on my soft palate. I have had them removed twice, and twice they have flared back up. My ENT specialist believes it's do to the trauma caused by having them cut out. Seeing that it is located near the scar tissue from the removal.

My doctor told me that unless they do not burst and drain, become hard, or become very painful there is no need to keep having them removed and biopsied any longer. as long as I can live with them.

The bump is always there but about twice a week it will swell up, begins about the size of a very tiny clear BB and in about a day it will drain and go back down. I believe it's because of the location, being near my uvula that when I swallow food. It's really annoying and the fact I am always feeling for it with my tongue because I know it's there doesn't help also LOL

So If anybody else has problems with them re-occuring after the surgery...you are not alone and it is something you can live with. My doctor told me he's heard of people having them for years. It's not dangerous...JUST REALLY ANNOYING!
